If he had unprotected vaginal sex with Jenny several times, it isn’t at all surprising.
The top ways to get HIV are to a) be extremely unlucky and get a blood transfusion in the 1980s (Arthur Ashe, Ryan White), b) use needles to inject heroin with people who are HIV+ and c) have lots of unprotected anal sex with people who are HIV+.
There’s a reason why plenty of extremely reckless rock stars never got HIV in the 80s as long as they had no interest in intravenous drug use.
I always thought that Jenny's issues more aligned with Hepatitis C as she didn't present any of the late stage HIV/AIDS symptoms. Her lifestyle and timeline would have matched well with a Hep C infection. Hep C wasn't identified until the late 80's and she died in the early 80's.
The movie was probably trying to catch on to the HIV storyline of the 80's, but Hep C makes more sense.

It’s been a while since I watched the movie. Is it ever implied that she used needles? I don’t recall.
This would obviously not preclude Hep C

Been a while since I've seen it as well, but I recall during the "Freebird" scene where she's on the ledge at the apartment/hotel, there is a dude passed out on the bed with a needle in his arm. They weren't blatant about it, but was definitely implied.

The question is, did he get HIV from sex with men? Very likely.

Hep C might make more sense, but I'm pretty damn positive it's supposed to be HIV/AIDS

You would be amazed at the access you have to doctors and breakthrough treatments not covered by insurance, if you have money.
MIL was diagnosed with cancer. It was a bleak outlook. They wanted to do radiation therapy in LA. We fought like hell to get into MD Andersen. We basically told them that money is not an issue. They accepted us two weeks after the diagnosis, booked a hotel across the street for 3 months, did cutting edge treatments, had a risky surgery, and is now cancer free.
She would no longer be with us if we just went with the network in LA and did insurance covered treatments.
One thing I learned is that there are real doctors, and there are NOLA area doctors. Real doctors devote their life to their profession. They spend their off time researching cases, attending seminars, etc. They are married to the job. NOLA doctors stick to a 9 to 5 schedule and often cut out early or take off to go to a festival, a fun Friday lunch in the French Quarter, you name it. They make good money but do just enough to maintain their reputation. I call them the Jazzfest network of doctors.
We were blown away by the dedication the doctors at MDA had,
It does not apply to all doctors. There are good doctors in this state. You just have to search hard for them.

Didn’t he say in an interview a few years back he doesn’t have it anymore?
According to the HIV commercials that seem to play every freaking break now, the medicine now makes it undetectable as long as you're on it. So that would check out considering he was probably taking it years before anyone else.

Its a 100% likely, My wife worked for the department of health in sexual transmitted diseases for 10yrs. the likely hood of him getting Aids from sex with a woman is almost impossible.
