We have two gs 13 level management level types that are really needing to go. One is obstinate and unqualified and the other is caught up in a history of inflammatory remarks. The second most recently told some support staff that worked with a person who attempted suicide that she brought it on herself and was a loser. Both have done things that should be fireable offenses but with little repercussions.

Why it is it so hard to fire federal employees?

Have never worked Federal. Never had a problem dismissing staff when working for State of Texas, just had to do due diligence, which one ought to do anyway

They have a property right in their job. Requires a lot of due process hoops

While I understand the problems their "protections" cause, I can also see why they have to have some.

How many former Bush hires would still have a job after Obozo got elected? And how many of Clinton's hires woulda lasted GWB's tenure? If hired/fired is determined by the political whims and fancies as the pendulum swings back and forth there's not gonna be a lot of stability in low level government jobs.

You really wanna go through a total house cleaning and rehiring retraining for these superbly run organizations that we all rely on now? Imagine every 4 years, or 8 max, entire bureaus go through new hire training while you wait on them to learn.

The primary reason is because it's expensive... that and to actually pull it off requires getting it past a whole bunch of people. It's similar to the school system in NYC having to put teachers in a building for 8 hours a day to do nothing, because it's cheaper and more productive than trying to fire them. The military does it too, they just move them to the basement of the Pentagon to shuffle papers for the rest of their contract

If you are managing GS13-level staff, you should know the process. It should always be difficult to fire people, but not a big challenge if you do it right.

You can do it right all day long. Firing someone (and just about any other administrative action in gov't service) requires going through a long chain of people who have no incentive to do a good job.

Why do you single out government. It is just as hard to fire people from career jobs a lot of time. Someone told me recently their boss had to get an incompetent coworker fired and they were told they had to wait 6 months before HR would even consider letting the person go.

If you don't understand that the federal process is much harder, you've probably never had a government job

Federal employee here, GS-13, Step 6 with 25% LEAP overtime pay. I swear to you, it is impossible to fire a federal employee. Most of the guys I work with are squared away but there are some people in my office that are straight up stealing tax dollars. They know it and brag about it. We all get paid the same amount, regardless of work and no merit can be used in determining pay.

Basically, short of committing a crime or just straight up refusing to arrive at work (as long as you actually show up, you don't have to do anything once there), you can't/won't be fired. It's pathetic.

and this my friends is is why small government is better...most inefficient run organization in the country/world at every level....but we keep eating what they shove down our throat....

Hmm, well depends what you mean. But I've seen plenty of federal employees fired on the spot for either royally fricking up or poor performance.

Unions.

The only way a federal employee can get fired is by either stealing something while working or because of a violent attack against another employee. Almost anything else, they have a lifetime job.

I mean that just isn't true. There are a few quick and easy ways for GS employees to get fired.

Sexual harassment (just happened where I am)
Discriminatory practices
DUI
Just to name a few

But you are correct, being lazy won't get you fired
