Why is the term "Jews" considered both the acceptable label as well as a slur for a group of people?

Polak is the Polish equivalent of the word "Pole", which is used to identify Polish people, yet it is also deemed a derogatory term.

He wasn't. He was just in the general area and well...I guess it is better than my cousin who fought in Vietnam referring to them as zipperheads. As in "zips in the wire."

Yeah these were old people. Want to know what my country grandmother called black people?

People that try to say the term "Chinaman" is Somehow derogatory are mad. There are numerous direct examples of other nationalities called the same thing, this has always bewildered me.

Psh, since when did "Oriental" become unacceptable?

Englishman, Frenchman, Irishman, etc. are not comparable to Chinaman. You'd have to say Englandman, Franceman, Irelandman, etc. for it to be a direct comparison. Chineseman would be the comparable term.

I've never referred to an English or French friend as "Englishmen" or "Frenchmen". It is just jarring. He's fricking English, not Englishman. Really, who uses that term?

What's next? Germanman?

Asian-american covers literally every demographic in the world.

Considering where the bulk of the human population is.

You are well trained.

I want to know why Ace Hardware had to go to "Helpful Hardware Folks" 40 years ago because "Helpful Hardware Man" was so horribly offensive, but I just just saw an X-Men movie last week where half of them were chicks and not a peep.

guess there wasn't a left wing bullshite agenda reason to fake offense on that one

My grandfather called every Asian he saw a Chinaman so it probably has something to do with that.

When people tell you they prefer not to be called by a descriptor, then basic human decency says you probably should respect thier choice. Is it dumb to be offended by everything? Absolutely. Should you continue to refer to people with names they've asked you not to? Absolutely not.

As an Asian-American, Oriental isn't offensive. A lot of other Asian-Americans I know would say the same. If I were to ask my mom's side of the family, they would laugh and tell you it's not offensive. It's just the same old schtick where people try to be offended for a group that really could give a damn. I'm sure these people who are offended, probably have no idea what the term Occidental means.

It definitely is not. My freshman yr at LSU ('98) I was very quickly told to never refer to an asain person as oriental bc they arent rugs.
