Florida and Texas are out of control.
Granted I understand those states are larger, but still.

It's no more an issue in La than it is in most other states

So from 2011 to 2012 drunk driving deaths increased in Louisiana?
Looks like those checkpoints are working out great.

I blame the police checkpoints.

Apparently I'm working my way to the top of the list.
Born and raised in LA, then lived in FL, just moved to TX.

Because many people don't know how to govern themselves or their own behavior, and tolerance or moderation isn't a consideration when compared to going overboard, and then there's the fact of how we live today, and that's bigger than anything in the reasoning behind it.
There are few to no neighborhood bars, and few to no sidewalks. Public transportation is either extremely inconvenient, undependable, or never around, and we have elected to build an ever expanding suburban neighborhood sprawl than a city, and so you just can't get around without a personal vehicle or it makes it very difficult to do so, yet we want people to come out, have a night life, and spend money.
I mean, WTF man? You have to get home, and asking someone to sit there stone cold sober while everyone else has a blast is impractical and I don't care how many people say it, it's BS for most people. They're just like the people were when I was growing up, those who were in better shape than the rest of us.
Truth is, if you're going to have a night life in places, and you want to live in places that have an interesting scene, then you need to somehow find a way to have public transportation more accessible and chill on the restrictions on neighborhood bar licenses so that we can make it more practical to go out and have a drink without worrying how we are going to pilot home at the end of the night. It's nonsense. OF COURSE, there's a problem with drinking and driving. It's the way we've built our cities and lives that drive this.

Arizona and Pennsylvania....they have an epidemic.
Sad story......
Funny thing is most of the ones in SW PA are from WV and Ohio. Ohio is a cespool for DWI

I think a lot of it has to do with affordable and reliable public transportation. After a night out, I can easily use a subway or taxi to go home. When I lived in New Orleans I would have a taxi take me home. Outside of a large city, taxis and other means of public transportation or scarce or shady as hell.

Eh, Ohio has almost 3 times Louisiana's population and less than double the number of DWI related deaths.
ETA: to the OP's question, many have nailed it on the head. Drinking is a large part of the culture in south LA, couple that with the fact that public transportation and taxi services are lacking in many areas, and you get the result.

sounds to me like we need some accurate per capita figureS.

Its not just Louisiana. I didnt click on every state but all but 1 had an increase in DUI related traffic deaths. All but Colorado, interesting.

It's worse in Texas. Drunk driving among Hispanic men is beyond epidemic proportions. Couple that with the same issues as LA ("macho" factor).
Driving late night in Dallas or Houston? Better watch which side of the freeway those headlights are coming from.
