I've made my own "beef" jerky many times, I hardly come out much better than buying it in the store except taste - so preferably, I like to make my jerky from deer.

The wife and stopped at a place that opened in the Lakeview area of New Orleans a few weeks ago. They specialize in smoked meats, game meats, specialty jams/jellies, etc. and they also sell cracklin'.

I asked if they did it on site and they do. Then I asked how much a pound and the guy tells me "Better I give you the price per 1/4 lb." and proceeds to tell me it sells for $7.50 a quarter pound. That's $30 a lb. and totally out the box. Needless to say, I passed.

I've been to the one in Gonzales. Its decent and they have a bunch of different flavors. It's been a year or so since I've been so I don't remember the cost.

beef prices have gone up, and the pieces of meat people used 2 use, has become more popular, so instead of getting that round steak(example) at $2.99 on sale, shite is in the $6's.

I have bought from the 2 places in La, that everyone recommends, and a place in Texas, and the Texas stuff blows the La places doors off. And i'm not saying the La jerky was bad, but that it wasn't even a comparison between Bourgeios and this place in Texas.

There is a place i deliver product 2, and they smoke their own jerky, they charge $45 per pound and the hispter d-bags eat it up at that price.

I laugh, stuff is good, but not even top10 for me, and certainly not at $45 per pound.

*They ask $89 per pound for Smoked prawns, and the morons pay that price.

A buddy of mine told me about that place and said the product is very good, but expensive as hell for what you're getting.

He did say if money was no object, he could eat a ton of the stuff since it tasted so good. That's all I know about it.

I make my own for camping trips. Great snacks on trails. If you think about the various costs associated with it ... it is damn expensive.

The biggest is the cost of the meat. Someone in the thread earlier said you get about a 40% yield. I think that is high. I get about 25% at best and beef isn't cheap. Factor in the seasoning, cost of fuel, time it adds up fast.

This thread is going to force me to figure out what my cost per pound is next time I make it.

This is where I was confused:

"The wife and stopped at a place that opened in the Lakeview area of New Orleans a few weeks ago. They specialize in smoked meats, game meats, specialty jams/jellies, etc. and they also sell cracklin'."

They did not just open in Lakeview, been there for awhile. At least 2 years.

Put that in your gumbo and the flavor is great.

Is the Beef Jerky place by Cabelas still open?

My fault as I could have worded it better. What I meant was the wife and I stopped in there just a few weeks ago, not that the store recently opened.
