If I was younger and just venturing out into the world, it would definitely intrigue me to live there.

Good seafood
Nice looking women
Good job opportunities
Close to beaches

Baldwin County (250k population and growing) is across the bay but isn't included in the Mobile metro area for some reason.

Mobile's mayor is Republican, who tend to be tougher on crime.

For some reason, they do not include the eastern shore with the metro.
It's like new orleans, not including the north shore

I was going to say low employment, but after asking my AI friend, Mobile has the highest Unemployment so I am baffled...

quote:

Based on the most recent data available, here are the unemployment rates for the cities you've mentioned:

Baton Rouge, LA: As of November 2024, the unemployment rate was 3.8%.

New Orleans, LA: In November 2024, the unemployment rate stood at 4.3%.

Shreveport, LA: The unemployment rate was 3.7% in November 2023.

Mobile, AL: In January 2024, the unemployment rate was 5.0%.

Among these cities, Baton Rouge, LA, and Shreveport, LA, have the lowest unemployment rates, indicating relatively better job opportunities compared to New Orleans and Mobile.

Idk, their mayor is a white male republican. Anyone from mobile can correct me, but I doubt this guy ever went to console the family of a kid that carjacked someone.

Shreveport now has a white male republican mayor, Baton Rouge is about to have a white male republican mayor it will be interesting to see if things change in both cities.

I don’t think New Orleans has had a republican mayor since reconstruction.

Why does Birmingham have more murders than any city in Louisiana? They have more than Baton Rouge and Shreveport combined.

Birmingham - 159 murders / 196k people = 81.1 murders/100k

quote:

159 homicides were reported in the city in 2024, exceeding the recent high of 153 set in 2022 and the historic high of 148 set in 1933.

Most sites report it at 400k+, I did find one site that has it at 662k.

Incorrect. Mobile had a new year's eve celebration. Not Mardi Gras.

Most crime isn’t happening in the “metro” area. It’s happening in the city proper.

I think city populations is probably accurate in this discussion

It's odd reading this since I was just at my mother's in Pensacola and you'd think Mobile was an active warzone from their local news.

I like both Mobile and Pensacola but there's sizeable rough, poverty stricken areas in both of them.

Mobile has its issues but is a pretty under rated spot in the Gulf South region, especially for 20-30 something demographic.

Out of the 4 major stations in the Mobile/Pensacola market, only WEAR is primarily identified as Pensacola/Mobile since they have their primary studios in P’cola. Most of the other stations have a primary studio in Mobile and a maybe a secondary studio in Pensacola. They will say Mobile/Pensacola. I think WALA even has a Foley bureau to serve the east shore.

But back to why the news makes it seem like Mogadishu, WEAR is owned by Sinclair. Sinclair is known to swing the news right wing. So any local crime story may get top billing even if it’s across the border in Mobile. Sinclair also manages WPMI in Mobile which is owned by Deerfield which could be described as a possibly a shell company to go around the FCC rules on duopolies and ownership limits through LMA’s with Sinclair. Through that agreement, some of WPMI’s functions are handled by WEAR. WPMI has really scaled back some of its news operations not to compete as much against WEAR.

Mobile metro is less than 500k? Wow, looking at their downtown/skyline you’d think it would be a lot larger.

Mobile metro lost Baldwin County which became its own metro area...the Daphne/Fairhope/Foley metropolitan area...a few years ago. Metro Mobile lost nearly 3,200 residents from 2020 to 2023. Meanwhile, the new Daphne/Fairhope/Foley metro area gained nearly 22,000 residents during the same time period and was the 9th fastest growing metropolitan area in the country from 2020 to 2023.

Mobile metro - 411,640 (as of July 2023)
Daphne/Fairhope/Foley - 253,507 (as of July 2023)

The old Mobile metro for many years consisted of both Mobile County and Baldwin County which together are now designated as the Mobile/Daphne/Fairhope Combined Statistical Area (CSA) with a population of 665,147 as of 2023
