I don't. This is just bizarre. I'm one of those people who (correctly) thinks there's a lot less racism than there was in the past. I've gotten into quite a few arguments with leftists about that over the years (on other messageboards, not here). This is the first time I've ever encountered something that made me think I was wrong and some people are actually more racist than I thought they were.

No argument that there is less racism nowadays. But there are some fragile white boys on this board that get all triggered by seeing interracial couples on tv. In my experience, leftists are just as racist as the idiots that hate to see a commerical with a mixed couple shopping for a new car.

You already know the answer to this: they're pushing an agenda and actively brainwashing the public

What agenda? To normalize being gay and inter-racial marriage? Look I snicker when my SO is watching some drama show and in a group of 10 poeple there is 2 gays, a transexual, and some black guy dating an asian. It does look a little ridiculous and try hard on the parts of the writers but who really gives a shite. Go watch Narcos...oh wait..

While not true, there is a pretty significant over representation on tv just like all other minority groups.

It would be interesting to sit a foreigner in front of ABC for 12 hours and ask them to guess demographic numbers based on what they've watched.

Imagine being on the fence about who you were going to vote for and then deciding on trump because you saw a black man and a white woman cohabitating in a Lexus commercial.

Imagine knowing that happened thousands of times and feeling all hurt by it and then still making those ads.

Who's actually the stupider person there?

I bet if you asked 10 random students at LSU what percentage of the population was gay, they'd probably say 15-25%. Is the issues as prevalent as some claim it is, probably not. But, it does have an effect on a lot of people's perception of reality.

Media does a great job of skewing people's perception of reality. Headlines that generate outrage get clicks/views/revenue, so the media makes more of them. Headlines that point out that life is pretty good don't, so the media makes less of them. Life is objectively better than ever in pretty much every measurable way, yet countless fools on the left and right think the world is falling apart.

I don't think its even that significant. Last time this topic came up, I think it was like 6% of network characters were gay, which yeah, its an over-representation for all of America, but probably not for urban areas, which is where most TV shows are set.

There's never been a better time for a human to exist than in America in 2019 yet depression levels are going up every day.

Media companies definitely play a significant role in that.

I think this is true but also somewhat necessary.

If the store clerk in a 5 second scene is gay, which may be an average gay person experience for a straight person in this country, it's not really going to do much to connect to with gay audiences.

While I do think certain shows/networks have agendas, I also think pumping up the demographic appeals is necessary in order to get enough screentime to make them noticeable for the audience.

The only attempt to provide an example so far in this thread is a white lady with purple hair from a movie (not even a TV show).

I'm not just talking about sitcoms. There are plenty of reality shows, news programs, etc that have an over representation of these groups.

In the past people were too busy trying to survive to complain about how terrible things genuinely were at the time. Today our society is so wealthy that people have an enormous amount of free time to complain about how terrible things are...like having to pay sales tax on tampons or knowing that TV shows with interracial couples exist.

I'm aware. But it was the only actual numbers I could find.

I doubt the numbers would look any different though.

Just tacking on to my prior point, which is that if there are 8 reality show stars on a show, you're going to have an overrepresentation of minorities in order to get the demographic appeals in there.

I don't think it's always a matter of appeasing groups, sometimes overssampling is the only practical way you can get that theme in there.

So what? Those groups were underrepresented in the past. Society has, as expected, over-corrected. There will eventually be a correction in the other direction because that's how the pendulum swings.

You will note the down votes you are getting for posting actual facts that are easily verifiable.

It completely proves the accuracy of this statement.

That seems like a rational argument. Perhaps it's an amalgamation of appeal, progressivism, and fear of the woke crowd.
