My father committed suicide when I was 12. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that he and my mom had divorced, and he didn't have us around all the time anymore. It just got to be too much for him. Whether that was actually the reason or not, I'll never really know.

I think that's the worst part...in a lot of cases, I think we just don't know why, and may never know why, someone decides to end it all.

The strain of living becomes more than it is worth and feeling nothing seems better than feeling bad all the time. Imagine a dark cloud comes over you and everything seems pointless, nothing makes you happy, you have no control over it, and you know that there is only one thing that will ever end it, opting out and ending everything. Depression sucks, and unless you have lived it you probably can never fully understand it.

To end the pain man. I have been collectively sad more in the last decade than I have been happy or just OK.

talk to a professional and/or your pastor or priest. Having experienced this first hand, this is no subject for this or any website especially with mostly immature young folks. I appreciate your reaching out for a "why" but there really is none. The voices won and most will never understand. If it happened to one of yours like one of mine, I will ask Gods help for you but please, this is not the place to find answers. God bless you and grant you and yours peace. It can happen for you I promise of your head and heart are ready to understand.
God bless you and yours..................I am here if you want to talk.

I think this subject is discussed to often on these boards.

This is not a slam.

I truly feel for the people effected by this tragic situation. Particularly the one's who post to talk out the pain. I've had 3 friends (1 very close) go this way. It's unbelievably awful to deal with. I bet it's infinitely more awful during the lead up and subsequent last moments for those who carry it out.

The circumstances that cause it very, yet are widely known. A simple google search can give you a wealth of knowledge on the subject. So why bring it up?

The thing is.. you never know when someone reading these threads may be on the verge of doing it themselves. It may sound silly but, discussions like this can inadvertently cause someone at the tipping point to follow through.

It's pretty irresponsible for those like OP to post this subject. I question his motivation.

For others truly struggling, there are more favorable places to discuss your feelings than the OT. Seeking those avenues out would be a better help for anyone in that situation. Also better for those who may be in a very low place. I sincerely hope this helps.

My grandpa did it when he was 85. He broke his leg coming off the golf course about a year prior and developed respiratory problems while healing. He had trouble breathing for a few months and woke up one day and had such a bad breathing day that he decided he couldn't take it anymore.

ETA: No one in the family blames him for what he did. Prolonged breathing issues at 85 years old is a level of misery that I couldn't imagine

I bet you think you're really smart? Well you're not. You are wrong. Wrong about me. Wrong about the need for cathartic expression on suicide. Talking about suicide doesn't trigger suicide. It prevents it.

There was a poster on the UGA board a few years ago who basically wrote a suicide note on the board. Other posters somehow managed to track him down and get ahold of his family. He still posts here. The way random strangers came together to help this guy was just awesome.

I think it should be discussed as much as possible, many people have little understanding of mental illness, if reading about suicide on this board helps a person recognize a problem in a friend, relative or themselves how can that be a negative thing?

Because discussing it here you can share feelings and insight with fellow human beings, something not available by reading a article from a Google search.

He wants to know the opinion of the posters here as to why they think people commit suicide. It would be hard to find a person whose life has not been effected by suicide, why do you think it something that should only be discussed in private?
