Why do women lie just to get attention?

This has always puzzled me. I have an aunt that is a compulsive liar. Everyday she puts attention seeking posts on Facebook and her online friends eat it up. Those who actually know her in real life know that her posts are full of shite though.

But many women will lie with reckless abandon and don't care that it could ruin someone else's life. Like the recent case of the Door Daah woman that told the world she had been sexually assaulted by a customer. Turns out she lied and she ended up being the one arrested for voyeurism.

But any time I see videos or posts about women talking about being sexually assaulted, the comments will be full of other women (usually incredibly unattractive women at that) claiming anyone and everyone raped them multiple times growing up. That just isn't true or based in any sort of reality. The statistics (even though they would be skewed by false reports) just don't support it. But they make rape sound as common as sunrise and sunset. True victims of sexual assault are not outspoken about it.

Men will lie and exaggerate too but almost always completely harmless. Think of exaggerated fishing, hunting, golfing accomplishments. They get better every time the story gets told. So many proven false accusations from women but I can't think of any perpetuated by a man. It would be an interesting subject to analyze.
