They stay because they don't want to go back to their house and have company that won't leave...

And.... two tables leaving a 15% tip is better than 1 table leaving a 25% tip

Well, I take a lot of customers out to lunch. At least 3 days a week. If I didn't ask for the check, then I'm not ready to leave. I'll leave when I'm finished doing business.

I respect this. Sometimes it takes patience to close the deal. Is this your strategy at Long John Silvers or also at nicer places like Chilis?

On Mardi Gras day, I was sitting alone at my table in a busy line-of-customers-outside French Quarter restaurant for an uncomfortably-long 12 minutes bc my GF and her daughter decided to pee in a "clean restroom" which had its own long line...after I had paid the check...to watch over their purses and already-delivered to-go drinks.

Usually people are in conversation. This is why parties in a busy restaurant are not usually a good thing. Texas roadhouse has it right by not doing parties of more than 8. This board would go nuclear over the thought of tipping on time spent at the table as well

Pro tip. Take a walk to settle the food. Go to the bathroom at least twice. Be sure to wash your hands. Then, when you grab your plate, go load up on meats first. Tell the staff you are doing keto.

Did they ask for the check? Or, did the wait staff try to rush them through?

Yeah. Don't ask me if I want desert, and I say no, and you bring me a check and expect me to leave, when there are two near full alcoholic drinks my wife and I have to finish.

As I got older I found that the times to sit down with friends came along less frequently. We are retired, have grandchildren and all of the other things that go along with having nothing to do.
We always check with the waiter/waitress first and make sure they know the tip will cover 2 or 3 tables.

Subtle brag I can still afford to go out to eat at places with cloth napkins.

Just one of the reasons me and my wife prefer sitting at the bar....way more acceptable to linger, talk and enjoy our time for hours than ut us at a table. Maybe it's because of the social expectation of eating oaying and leaving, but anymore than an hour at a table and my brain starts to itch

Working offshore has ruined my ability to enjoy a restaurant meal. When I'm at work I shovel my food down because I don't want to hear people talk about work. You got a lunch break for a reason.

Maybe I should work on this.

People walking by were thinking to themselves “Look at that alcoholic gay dude with all his purses”
