Why do some people linger at their restaurant table long after the check's been paid?

Nevermind the waitstaff is trying to turn the table over for the next customers. These people want to hang out sipping on their water with lemon. Of course an exception is made if it’s a fine dining establishment.

I think that’s annoying on behalf of the wait staff, depending on the place.

Applebees? GTFO.

A nice restaurant where hundreds or more than a thousand is spent? Take your time.

Did they ask for the check? Or, did the wait staff try to rush them through?

They’re probably European. At restaurants there, it’s your table for the entire evening.

People go out to eat at restaurants to socialize and for entertainment. If customers wanted to be rushed, they'd get fast food instead.

As a former waiter (many moons ago) maybe it's welcome if they get the feeling the party will tip. Often they continue to order drinks and it allows you to be even more attentive to your other tables.

I stay aware of the situation. If they are really busy and I am with a group of people, I am get them to wrap up the conversation. I just think its common courtesy. You go there to have dinner, we can go elsewhere to have conversation, go to the bar to drink, but don't just hang out at the table bullshitting. Especially if its a place you don't make reservations to.

That means there are people waiting for tables to open and if you were waiting for a table and seen people at a table who was finished eating and they were just bullshitting you would be bitching about how they are selfish assholes.

frick you a-hole. You want a table? Get here before me. Otherwise I’m going to sit here as long as I damn well please. And if you’re the server, I tipped you at least 25%. frick right off with your “flipping”’theory.

I mainly notice old folks doing this at casual neighborhood places. It’s their evening entertainment to get out of the house and sit there staring at everyone who comes through the door.

Maybe they’re hoping someone they know will walk through so they have someone else to talk to, but everyone they know died or moved away. There, feel bad now?

Key phrase: "after the check's been paid"

Finish your drinks and go.

Another key phrase: "sipping on their water with lemon"

They ain't ordering another drink. Also, I understand the subtlety here. I have been a waiter also.

That's not the kind of place he's talking about. Those waitresses have 11 other tables to work with.

This is the only bad habit my in-laws have. Wonderful people apart from sitting at a restaurant table for up tp two hours sometimes. Drives me nuts.

On the flip side - how about those servers that see that you have finished your meal but wait for another twenty minutes before bringing you the check so you can pay and leave?
