i think your argument works a lot better for monogamously dating than it does for marriage

I agree 100% with the OP. I'm a decent looking guy but nothing special. With that said, I was afraid of being rejected by women in my teens and early 20's so only had limited success with them. Around the time I turned 24, I developed more confidence and assertiveness and from that point on, I pretty much had any woman I desired including a few that looks wise were way out of my league. Once I stopped being afraid of hearing "no", I rarely ever did.
