I always thought making groceries meant cooking, not shopping

Eta: I'm probably wrong about that though because I don't say that dumb shite

You "buy" groceries with EBT or food stamps.

You make groceries with your own damn money that you earned.

It is strictly and exclusively an old school New Orleans phrase. You won't hear it anywhere else.

It's a phrase that has really died out and an older generation thing. It's pretty much just said as a joke now.

It's an idiomatic expression. You must not be from South Louisiana originally.

It comes from the translation of Faire from French to English. Faire means to do or to make in English.

As I understand it, the French for grocery shopping involves the verb for "to make/to do" which is fare in Italian, and hacer in Spanish. Whatever it is in French, it likely to be part of the colloquial phrase in said language. Given the preponderance of French-speaking people in many parts of New Orleans for well nigh 200 years, it would make sense that many would translate it literally, and voila...we "make groceries."

Some say it in fun, some say it half in fun and half in trying to keep some local color alive before we all sound like we're from wherever the education barons think the "perfect" American English accent and diction originates. Lord forbid we all sound different and reflect our roots without getting the pop culture's approval.
