Why do people always say "You're in my prayers"

when they know damn well not one prayer will be said? One of the most overused sayings I've seen.

That's why you gotta follow up with people and make sure they actually say the prayer. Make a phone call, it's not that hard.

People told me this when my mom was in the hospital. Then when she died they said it was all part of his plan. (Btw, why do people call god him or he? I would think a spiritual being wouldnt need reproductive organs)

I'm sure plenty of people that say you're in my prayer are genuine about it and will say a prayer for that person.
Even if they don't, its comforting for the person who is going through a tough time to hear those words. It reminds you that people care and you aren't alone in your struggles.

This sounds like a personal confession or conviction. How do you know not one prayer will be said? That's kinda silly.
I do agree that the phrase itself can be cliche, and wish there were a more genuine response people could use. But you shouldn't assume everyone that says it is just saying it for fun.
