Why do online forms always have a drop down for the state?

When filling out name/address on online forms, a user must manually type in all information except for the state. The state seems to always have a drop down his to select. Is there a technical reason for this?
I get that there is a small number of states but one more box to manually fill in is not going to save a while lot of time.

Because most dumbasses would probably get the initials for the states wrong.

A corollary to Murphy’s Law is this...
Nothing is fool proof to a sufficiently talented fool.
Imagine the general public trying to spell their state.

See that typo you made in the above sentence? That is the reason. A drop-down prevents typos and thus errors in the shipping address of whatever you ordered.

Click on the box
Hit L
Louisiana auto populates
Tab off that box
A lot quicker than typing out Louisiana. And like someone else said, plenty of people will not spell their state correctly.

The real question is why can’t the Program just use the zip code entered to auto pull the state.

I know tons of people that butcher definitely regularly.

Cause "The Program" would have to maintain a compilation of zip codes and be regularly updated with changes. All in the name of... convenience?

It really isn’t that difficult. A quick spreadsheet and filter function can handle this in no time. You people have no clue

Not to mention this, but most modern browsers have auto fill and can populate this stuff automatically.
I swear some people sound like this is the first time ever using a computer.

Yep, I get typos being an issue but if that is the main reason then first select the state from the drop down and then select the city from the drop down.
If I mistyped my street number or incorrectly enter my zip code or street name, the same issue would occur. I just dont get why the correctly spelled state name is seemingly the most important one.

Anything that can be done to remove human error is a smart move. There are tons of morons out there

I have a phone, laptop, a desktop and two tablets. I also order stuff for home and my office on all the devices. Auto fill is not always an available option.

You aint learnin' baw
States don't change, cities do and need to be maintained. Plus there could be 200+ cities in a state... you going to scroll through all that?

If it has a space for zip code you would think it would automatically populate city and state.

If you trusted people to get zip code correct...
