It’s makes a lot more sense to go to a “nearby “ gas station for your coffee than one that is further away.

Retired guys like to get together and bullshite. After you retire you will eventually get invited to join a local coffee group. Where I live there are several. Some go to a donut shop, some to Mcdonalds, some to one of the truck stop cafes, etc. I go sometimes to one in a truck stop cafe. We talk about hunting, investments, politics(a lot), family, old friends(living and dead), and LSU football. Saban/ Miles/Orgeron is always fun. Oh, by the way, Get off of my lawn.

Maybe he is retired and instead of getting his coffee and faggy arse belvita crackers to take to work he chooses to drink his coffee there so he can socialize with other regulars he knows who come in there. My local gas station has 3-4 older men who come in every morning and hang out about 20 minutes and BS. That guy you see might be the one who gets there first every morning. He probably thinks you are weird for being unsocial and buying girl crackers every morning.

Or why does anyone stop at a gas station on their drive to work every morning?
Exactly. Sounds like the OP is well on his way to being that old man someday.

Why do old men hang out at the nearby gas station?
They’re waiting for the cashier to get off work so he can follow her home

It probably brings him sadistic joy to observe the daily rat race that he no longer has to participate in.
You should envy the old bastard.

Hopefully not TL/DR....
I used to see an old retired guy almost every day standing outside of a local convenience store and he would be sipping a canned Pepsi. He wore an old high stacked trucker style ball cap, blue jeans, very old sneakers....you know the look. He nodded at people who made eye contact. I talked to him one day and found he lived about 1/4 mile away, His wife was retired as well, and his sister had worked at the same company I worked for. He had nothing to do so why not just hang out there.
I found he liked baseball and football so I invited him to go to a couple of away games for the local HS because he couldn’t drive too far. I’d pick him up at the convenience store. I found he had worked for the railroad and did not talk too much and nodded off easily. One of my sons and a friend of my son would ride with us. To shorten the story, he got advanced Alzheimer’s and faded away too quickly. My son still points at his house as we drive by and mentions nice old Mr. Meadows.

Every community has a spot where old retired guys go to have coffee and gossip every morning.

Back in 90 I worked at a gas station. Between 5:30 and 6:30 there were six guys or so that would come in and smoke a cig and drink a cup of coffee. They would share a newspaper and shoot the shite and laugh.
Seemed like a good way to start the day
