Great on the sailboat. Better mobility to grind and work lines

I get that, which is why I think the warmth argument is bologna.

If vests were awesome at keeping your core warm, people would be taking them off in the office.

Vests look good, but that's pretty much the only purpose for wearing one.

If you're going to warm your core, why not warm your arms too? Why shortchange for no reason?

No one wears shorts over pants to add additional warmth to their core.

I understand if you are playing golf or something, but 99% of these people are sitting at a desk or at a kids basketball game, etc. I've never had my normal daily mobility limited by a quarter zip or pullover.

It is what it is, a fashion piece.

The latest is all these schmucks walking around BR in their Barbour vests. I can't wait for this fad to go away.

Vests don't bother me one bit, but he's right.

They're a fashion piece, first and foremost. There is a reason you see people wearing them around the 72 degree office.

Oh, you mean a piece of clothing can be fashion pieces? You don't say.

Here's a clue. They can also be practical. And this is going to blow your mind. Hang on. Sometimes, the same piece can be both simultaneously!!!!

But LOL at those of you baws down South telling those of us who live up North about dressing for colder weather.

Yeah, it's such an asinine argument.

They're actually very warming.

Your face, head and core are more sensitive to temp changes than arms or legs.

Plus keeping the core warm affects the extremities.

LINK

quote:

When your core (torso) is warm it readily releases blood to the extremities. When your core gets cold your body's natural defense is stop sending blood to the extremities and keep it for vital organs and the brain. Therefore the best solution for cold hands and feet is often to heat up your core. Core warmth is most easily achieved through physical activity but increasing insulation is another option.

I actually always thought they were silly, then my wife bought me one for Christmas and I'm amazed at how warm it keeps me.

And it’s partly fashion and partly because they don’t trap heat in your pits and cook you while you’re inside. It’s covering a large surface area with a light insulator while letting your armpits breathe.

That being said, I don’t wear vests. But I get the appeal

Of course they are warming. But why warm just your core in hopes it will also warm your extremities?

Why not include sleeves in the process? It makes so much more sense to wear a sweater or pullover.

In rare cases, its due to mobility. In most cases, its because people like the way vests look.

Because vests keep your core warm when it's not cold enough for a sweater or jacket.
Then why are they often insulated? I’ve never understood the stupidity of sleeveless vests either. If it’s cold enough to warm your core....

Because it doubles as a life preserver should I fall out of my yacht on those chilly 50 degree mornings.

Sometimes the sleeves are too warm, trap too much heat. Particularly inside. You can wear a vest all day, even indoors. It's very comfortable.

Theyre also much easier to layer over too, than a full jacket.
