I was in DC the other day and visited a few museums. When I got back (and mentioned that I had been to a few museums), the first thing a couple of people asked me was if I had been to the Holocaust museum. Errr no. Why would I want to go to that? It was an horrific event. I don't want to see pictures of emaciated people being tortured.

I would no sooner go to that than I'd go to a Jeffrey Dahmer museum or a Ted Bundy rape victim museum, or Mao and Stalin murdered enemies of the state or starvation museum.

From their site:
quote:

Students must recognize the relevance of the Holocaust in our world affairs today and the role of individuals and communities in preventing dehumanization.

There have been many genocides throughout history. Why do we focus so much on this one? Why are we memorializing it?

You're right.

I'd much rather live in a world where everyone says "The Holocaust? What's that?"

What could go wrong?

So that it's not forgotten and history does not attempt to repeat itself in regards to it.

My parents brought me when it first openedopened. I haven't wanted to go back.
Truly was evil what was done then.
It's a well laid out museum but it's such a downer it makes going to other museums after hard.

Yep.
A visit to the Holocaust Museum ruined my family vacation to DC. Would not recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy a pleasure trip.

We have lots of museums about horrific events. WWII, Civil War, Civil Rights era, Andy Warhol. Lest we forget.

This thread got anchored.

It's almost as if there are certain things we aren't allowed to talk about. I don't even....

Careful now...you’re getting into red pill territory. Can’t close Pandora’s box once you open it.

How many, then? (Softball..)

SOOOOO, if it was just 4,696,696... then that would be fine? I think most people recognize that it's just a representative number, and not to be taken as exact.
Idiot.

"if you don't know history you are doomed to repeat it" or something like that.

Why not? To not offend the fragile sensibilities of our society?

An experience like the Holocaust museum forces us to confront the reality of the evil we have to fight and prevent. Visiting a deserted battlefield doesn't exactly have the same impact.

Dunno. I'd imagine there are museums or something somewhere more focused on those tragedies.

Either way, what's your point? That we should tear down the Holocaust museum because it's getting preferential treatment?

About that....

quote:

Two-thirds of American millennials cannot identify what Auschwitz is, according to a study released on Holocaust Memorial Day which found knowledge of the genocide that killed six million Jews during the Second World War is rapidly fading among US adults, especially those aged 18 to 34.

Find the people who want to donate a lot of money to build it, political connections and manpower to have it built, and you will have one.
