He was fighting the Brits. He needed the money, wanted to make friends with the yanks, and knew he couldn't defend it if some one took it.

Of course not, how could he? The US didn't really know what they bought except that it was contiguous land. Hence why Bartholomew Hunt and Leslie Edwards were sent to explore it.

Yeah, relatively speaking at the time, the planet was the size of Saturn in their minds.

The 8th grade Louisiana History answer is:

Once France realized it couldn’t retake Haiti, there was really not much incentive to hang on to LA. Haiti was the moneymaker, not Louisiana.

Napoleon was fighting wars in Europe and needed to pay for them.

What is funny is that we didn’t have 15 million. We borrowed money from the Brits, who were fighting the French.

Then we stop paying the loan back once the war of 1812 kicked off.

During the late middle ages, China's trading empire spanned the Pacific and Indian Oceans. There is some speculation, though no hard evidence, that Chinese explorers may have reached the west coast of North America. A new emperor came to power who was an isolationist, and China turned inward.

Interesting book on the subject LINK

Well, Britain certainly didn't give up the Colonies without a fight. Spain and France ultimately decided the money we were willing to pay for the land outweighed the logistics of controlling such a large area from an ocean away.

Also don't forget that we were a young country at the time that was not anywhere near what we are now. We didn't even become a "superpower" until 2 World Wars wiped out all the infrastructure in Europe

I know it’s been a while, but they’re called books. It’s clearly been a while since you’ve read one if you are wondering why 19th century “Germany” and “Italy” weren’t threats to the United States.

This a really simplistic view of things. It's really complicated why France and Spain left North America alone. A big part of it is the Haitian Revolution and the revolutions in South American countries by Bolivar. That along with all the power struggles of all the European powers in Europe.

Napoleon also knew that the Americans would keep moving West and that eventually he would lose it to the United States or Spain. Figured he would pick up a little money instead of losing it for free.
