Its NOLA. They cant, and will never get shite right. This problem has been going on for 50 years. Just look who is in charge, and that's all you need to know. Its a revolving door. The people at the top are responsible for the equipment. They also stole the money tbat was given to them to fix it. Gotta meet the payroll for crooked politicians and contractors. God forbid another Katrina hits, because the city wont be able to handle it again. This time, it wont come back.

Because 90% of the money went into the politicians and their friendly contractors pockets with no work done. 10% went to hiring some dirt movers to "move this dirt over there, and move this dirt over there and make it look like you're doing something".

New Orleans problems in the past has been because the backup generators for the pumps were put in the a hole in the lowest part of the entire state to hide them from the water.

How much hp are the pumps? Why not just use diesel? Do they run THAT much?

Jefferson Parish used natural gas engines just like in the oilfield. I'm not sure if they are made by Cat or Waukesha.

The Woods pumps are based on ancient technology used to lift water from a river or canal and over a levee or into a canal. Electric motors are much less expensive in CAPEX and OPEX

When these pumps were installed, it was electric motor or steam. You would need storage tanks for a lot of diesel per station. Who is going to sell their mansion for the pumps at 17th St Canal, to install diesel tanks?

I get that, but clearly these + infrastructure are not. Gas recip engines are a fine potential solution as well.

I understand none of it is cheap. The city has been given bazillions of dollars over the years which has squandered. Theres no excuse for there to not be something more reliable in place.

Because they'd rather spend money on more important things like art, first class tickets to Europe, and tearing down statues.

If you have ever been to the S&WB you see what is employed by S&WB and how few of them do anything at all. Street flooding is largely caused by catch basins being clogged up. Other cities have crews which clean each one at least annually. New Orleans hasn't done that in recent years. Mother in law's home in Uptown flooded ground floor at least once annually before Katrina. She was slick to have flood insurance and collect every time. All catch basins were cleaned at least that neighborhood after Katrina and no flooding for well over a decade.

They left $500 million unspent and lost it. It wasn't theft, it was incompetence.

On these size pumps you needs VFDs. If you don't you'd brown out the neighbors when motors are switched to line feed. The VFDs help the pumps start slowly reducing the inrush current.

There was no such thing when built. VFD's even 25 years ago for that size o motors were in large cabinets. That is why plastic compounders used DC motors for their extruders. Also many companies used hydraulic motors instead of electric ones until a little over 25 years ago.

They have direct feed from the power plant built to supply only to them and the electricity with underground cables.

We have managed to gas light millions into believing we went to the moon... why can't we run some pumps? Better?

Can you explain the 15 extremely detailed books I’ve read about the Apollo program written by engineers, astronauts, and Mission Directors?

It had an expiration date. It is no longer available several years ago.

If someone gave you $500 million to spend by a certain date and you didn't spend it, that would rather stupid.

It's just 7 pump stations at once.

Why are you making a big deal about this?
