Qin Dynasty was successful in bringing the entire nation together by conquering everyone. The dynasty didn't last due to cruel policies and poor management. The Han Dynasty created the Chinese identity and built the framework for every dynasty after it. They were fortunate the Mongols were so uncultured that every ruler drank and ate themselves to an early grave, resulting into future Khans basically becoming Chinese (Yuan).
Short answer, one of the most fertile lands in the world with a culturally homogeneous people (achieved by an unparalleled ethnic cleansing campaign by the Qin). Coupled with very meager regional adversaries for a period of 3000 years allows a nation to flourish. Similar success was demonstrated in Ancient Rome and the Persians in the West.
