how can data be correct if self-reported?
let me put this in terms you can understand.
leBron uses the NBA to report his stats.
Cpt self-reports his stats for his NBA play.
Cpt has stats that are better than Lebron. Do you think this is accurate?
Got it.

Fun facts:
We have more guns in private ownership than ever before!
We also have a decrease of almost 60% in gun violence since 1990

Israel used to have a huge problem with outsiders shooting up their schools. They addressed the problem and now they don't have that problem anymore. They started becoming proactive, installing cameras and putting protection at the schools.
The problem is, we aren't being proactive. We should be taking measures to help protect these schools. At the least, maybe cameras and security.
Also, easier access to mental health counseling/facilities would help. Instead, people try to blame the gun, not the real problem, which is the person who pulls the trigger of the gun.

Israel has gun control that would give most OT posters an aneurysm.

Columbine was the start.
Actually, there was a string of them in late 1997 through 1998 in places like Paducah, KY and Pearl, MS (near my home town). They were covered by media, but they just had way fewer casualties than Columbine, so media attention came and went rather quickly.
But, honestly, there is a mix of reasons for these shootings. I think a big, big reason for the increase is that there is a growing and sizable percentage of kids growing up with little to no daily parental involvement. Heck, how many parents bother to check to see what types of apps and social media presence their kids have on their phones? Some parents will buy their kids any video game they want and at a very early age. I think the violent games (especially first person shooters) do desensitize kids and teenagers to a degree.
The gun issue is multi-layered. Should there be background checks? Absolutely. Not everyone should be able to legally own a gun. But, if someone is determined to kill, they will find a way to do it.
Guns have also almost always been accessible to most people. Most of us on this website probably grew up in homes where our dads had at least a rifle or shotgun, if not a hand gun in the house.
Why weren't these shootings as common in the 80's and 90's? I can't speak for the rest of you, but my dad taught me gun safety at an early age. Guns weren't meant to settle arguments. I even took a state-sanctioned hunter safety course while in high school (and I didn't even hunt). Most of the guys I grew up with were raised the same way. Taught to respect the power of firearms and to fear the kind of damage they can cause if used recklessly.

Guns and crazy people. Nothing will change as long as the two are allowed to mix.

ok so lets see why other nations blow up schools with bombs more than this country.
Also, most listed on there have less population and dont have open borders for the filth of the world to come procreate here and instantly become american.

Has CptBengal been reported to the FBI yet? He could be the next Cruz or Paddock. Dead serious.

Some of the university shootings were done by foreign students.
I think i recall a specific case about the indian students getting killed in the dorms and it was over some gambling debt.

I think it is a combination of the lack of care/ bravado the US has over mental health, our extreme diversity, and our guns
Mental health is #1 imo. If there weren't guns, the psychos would just resort to other weapons to do their killings. Drugs should also be mentioned here, especially prescription painkillers. They are getting out of hand, and they certainly do not help the mentally ill people of this country.
Diversity I am not so sure about. I suppose with how prejudice our society has become, that could certainly play a role in violence and even the mental health of some as well. Not sure it's as big of a factor though.
Not sure on the numbers on guns compared to other weapons/objects, but I would guess guns are used the most for school killings.
Maybe this contradicts the problem with mental health (as a teacher could certainly be just as mentally ill as the student causing the mass killing), but I believe training teachers how to use guns could go a long way with preventing some of these killings. I suppose you could argue that's why we have security guards at schools now, but I believe having more responsible adults carry could really prevent these crazy people from getting away with killing all of the innocent students/faculty/etc. I could certainly be wrong about that though.

This is probably true, but guns are more effective at killing than most other weapons, so if there weren't guns, it'd at least save some lives

I agree. Guns are obviously more efficient (well, besides explosives that is).

This was actually a big worry after the OKC bombing in 1995. TV stations were actually crazy enough to show the types of ingredients that were used to make something like that and how easy it is to obtain them. Thankfully, it never caught on with the high school-aged kids.
