Why are school killings almost inherently American?

Disclaimer, I dont think it is all about guns, so lets try and not argue solely on that like every other thread.....

What is it that is unique to the USA, that causes school killings to be so much worse that the rest of the 1st world?

quote:

We tried to limit any effects of possible underreporting of cases by limiting the data set to the most recent ten years of data, between 2000 and 2010, and by counting only incidents in which someone was injured or killed. (Limiting the data to 2000 or after also eliminated one country that no longer exists: Austria-Hungary.)

The results are above. The number of such incidents in the US was only one less than in all the other 36 countries put together. In 13 of those countries there were no incidents at all, either actual or attempted.

In 2010, the US was home to a population of approximately 309 million. The populations of these other countries totaled 3.8 billion.

I think it is a combination of the lack of care/ bravado the US has over mental health, our extreme diversity, and our guns

We allow guns here

Check out knife killings and mass murders via other weapons than guns and let us know what you find.

How often did this shite happen before Columbine? I'd imagine the heavy media coverage and sensationalism of a school shooting doesn't exactly help stop future shootings.

While knife attacks are common in Asia, the death toll is usually lower.

But with guns, you can kill more people , and schools are sadly a really favorable venue for a madman with a gun. Small rooms mean you don't have to be too accurate.

More people + more guns = more school shootings.

The rate of incidents remained almost unchanged from 1972-2010

Then, in 2011 there was a huge growth

It's a trend/fad. Start by not showing the shooter's face in the media and start referring to them as shooter #1 and so forth, can't hurt.

This is an excerpt of a post shared on my LinkedIn this morning. I tend to agree that the US has an “angry young man” problem. A lot of it has to do with how we discipline and treat boys.

quote:

Does America have a gun problem? Of course. Undeniably. But you know what else? America has an angry young man problem, unique in the developed world. Something about our culture creates angry young men who feel entitled to engage in mass slaughter as retribution for all the perceived slights of their lives.

No, there will be no gun policy changes. That simply won't happen. But even without policy changes, perhaps we can do something locally, in our schools and communities, to address this angry young man problem.

Why isn't mexico in that graphic.

Is that "statistic" hand picking countries that serve it's purpose of making it seem like US is the only place in the world with this problem.

I'm definitely on the side of "there is clearly a problem and we have to do something"

But I'm also on the side of "I hate memes that portray shite as fact when they are really lies or manipulated stats"

Combo of mental illness and notoriety from media coverage IMO.

I don’t get it. Perpetrators of school shootings have come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. What are you basing this on?
