I think partially because they've very recently been in conditions that resemble conditions here in the Great Depression. Heck, they probably still are in those conditions in many places there. Hard times tend to make hard people.
Come to think of it, I'd bet the top selling songs in the depression weren't very tough sounding either. But the people I've known that went through it were pretty tough.
