Whats a mortgage run you for a house worth 360-365? We are looking to move this summer at some point. Frisco is where we are currently looking.
How is the cost of living in general? Utilities, car insurance and those type things?

You can email me if you want or give me your email. I live in the Frisco Mckinney area and have for the past 15 years.
Cost of living and goods in general are good for the area.
The growth is so high you literally have everything you need just in Collin county.
What's good about Frisco is its huge and you have everything and a wide range

Look west of the Tollway unless you're Indian. They are buying almost all the new on the east side and in northwestern Allen.

I think the rule is your mortgage is usually 1% of the value but that seems high with current interest rates.
We do an escrow account and my mortgage is $2,600 for a home we paid $250,000 for 11 years ago.
The Mortgage part is probably around $1,400 and taxes/insurance another $1,200.
Our home is now valued at way north of $300,000. Payment went up $400 this year due to an increase in property taxes

Having lived in Houston and BR, this is a very accurate summary. And don't forget the higher auto insurance costs in Louisiana collected to pay for all the shyster billboards and TV commercials.

Won't be that way for much longer hahaha. I cry to sleep every night I shop in DFW market
Dallas and Austin pricing is going a bit nuts. But Houston has stayed flat. Mainly bc the drop in oil

Last 6 months I sold my house in College Town 2500 sq ft house with a carport. Bought in the Woodlands, 2500 sq ft house with garage and pool. sold for 474K and bought for 324K

Mexican labor
Correct. frickers are still framing houses at 2.50/ft. Try finding that in any other metro area in the US.

Even having to deal with a $10k property tax bill instead of my current $1500 tax bill, it would be about a net wash for me. The $3500 I'd save in state income tax and $5500 in Catholic school tuition would make up for the property tax difference.
Bingo! Its basically a wash with no state income tax vs. property taxes. A lot of the property tax money goes to the schools and it shows.
But in general its the overall cost of living. Many of the same items you buy in the stores like walmart or Lowes are cheaper by a few cents.
And don't forget electric is deregulated in TX so instead of having 1 choice you have like 200. Its kind of a pain in the arse to change electric companies all the time but its easy and its much cheaper to shop around. I'm expecting my electric bill to be between $35-$40 for May in a 2 story, 2450 sq ft home. Not bad. In Louisiana, your Entergy bill would be around $130.

That is crazy, I financed $274 and only 1880 including PMI.
That would be a deal breaker for me.

Don't be fooled by these guys that are complaining about property taxes without comparing that to LA's income taxes. Depending on the size of the property you buy, you come out way ahead in Texas. Factor in the cost of LA private schools vs taxes payed for the ISDs in TX, and it's a no-brainer.
Not to mention the overall cost of living is less and most jobs pay more than same job in Louisiana. There is a reason 10% of all people born in Louisiana move to Texas.
I believe Dallas still leads the country in lightning sales (fewest number of hours house is on the market) and Houston is in the top 10.
Its refreshing to see some common sense on the OT, on the political talk board a private school education in New Orleans blows any public school in Houston out of the water.

translation: no chance i retire in Texas
Property taxes for a $210K home in TX for retirees is $1,350. Not $4K if you were under 65.
Property taxes for retirees in Houston is much lower as several taxes are removed once you turn 65 because its assumed all your kids are out of school and no longer need the great school system.

Specifically areas around Houston. In the Kingwood area you can buy a house twice the size as one in Southwest La for the same price. Is it because there is some much more available labor there or are materials cheaper? What causes such a different in value?
Property taxes in TX are super high compared to LA to make up for the lack of state income tax.

At the end of the day the cost of living isn't much different
It's about opportunity and quality of living. Whenever gives you that, more power to you

Not by a large margin but in Houston, fuel is cheaper, produce is cheaper (a lot coming from Mexico), many items in the stores are cheaper as well (not by a lot)-maybe because of Houstons port-I dont know, repair and construction costs are certainly cheaper in Houston, not to mention lawn cutting guys. Very few people cut their own grass in Houston because its so cheap because of the immense competition. I'm one of the very few who still cuts his own. But paying $20-$25 in Houston vs. $50 in Baton Rouge.

I will agree with that for sure. Much more competition leads to cheaper products
I have Whole Foods, Sprouts, Kroger, Wal Mart, Tom Thumb, Target, and Market Street all within 10 minutes of my house. They always compete with each other.
i go back to Lake Charles and my mouth drops at the prices people pay at Albertsons, etc.

Cost of living is much more if you actually live in Houston or Dallas, burbs are probably cheaper than Louisiana but I couldn't handle commute when I lived there.
I'd be open to move back to Texas but I'd have to be able to afford somewhere like heights or west U in Houston or HP in dallas
