Whoever lives at Antarctica is a hero to me.

Absolutely. Seas so calm like you were riding on glass are awesome. Seas in full fury crashing over the decks, not so much.

America's first trans astronaut. A true pioneer.

Pictures don't really do them justice, you have to walk down the pier and up the brow before it starts to sink in.

Apollo 11 was in 1969, just eight years after the first man went to space.

Imagine being in the water and an damn aircraft carrier pulls up to pick you up.
I dont like getting close to regular boats in the water. That would be some uncomfortable shite right there

I didn't think they were so woke back in the 70's. Nice to see a man being able to wear a black bra and not be made fun of. Dylan is so proud of his grandpa.

Nope. The carrier stands aside and smaller boats go out to retrieve the crew. And they had cameras.
Does anyone else remember the capsule that filled with water and sank?
Those early missions got live coverage. Remember the waiting for the three parachutes to open?

Nice photo there!
I have an old fly fishing buddy who has recently moved back to Pennsylvania who was the Navy helicopter pilot to pick up the crew from Apollo 9. He said he was certainly excited to be part of the show, but that excitement waned a tad bit when he caught whiff of what the guys smelled like when they were brought onboard. Imagine guys who had been to the moon and back in a confined space with no toilet, no shower, etc. His crew pressure washed the interior of the chopper for a good thirty minutes after returning to the ship with the three astronauts.
Yeah, I know it wasn't Apollo 11 or 17, but it's a pretty cool story and pretty neat to meet and fish with someone who was a part of that whole operation in the Apollo years.
We'll probably never see a man set foot on the moon again in our lifetime now. (At least I'm pretty sure I won't.)
