I thought it was well established that Huey was hit by a bullet from one of his bodyguards, with the only question being whether it was an accident.

The majority of what I ever heard or read points toward it being one of the security detail. Whether an accident, a ricochet or on purpose has been the only real debate I've heard.

Did LHO's bullets kill JFK? Yes. Any other theory is cooksville.
Was the mafia involved? Possible. This is the real question.

The guy had enemies on both sides of the aisle. I have no doubt it was an inside job.
Read up on Long and the history of LA back then. Sounds just as miserable then as it does now.

Most things that people attribute to a grand conspiracy are usually just the product of incompetence or bungling.
People generally aren't smart enough to pull off big conspiracy plays, and no one can keep their damned mouth shut if they are in on one.

Weiss went to the capitol to confront HPL, either armed or unarmed. A scuffle ensued and shots were fired. In the melee, Long was probably hit by friendly fire. In the 1930's, the kind of training modern executive protective details undergo didn't exist, and Long's men were just guys that weren't professionals in any sense of the word. One of them was an ex prizefighter, IIRC.
However, this part is wrong. According to T. Harry Williams, still the canonical Long biographer, they were carrying .357's loaded with .38 special rounds.

It probably was not fired by one of the bodyguards, who carried larger caliber automatic handguns. No one has ever produced a bullet as evidence of the one that killed Long.

So you don't think that he thought he would get away with it? And scheduled a surgery the next day?
