So handicapped people aren't able to go to the gym and try to strengthen the muscles they are still able to use? Or do light exercise to lose weight to better manage their medical conditions?

The insurance companies try everything they can to get patients off of these expensive drugs.

That's part of the equation. They also want their patients to kick the habit because of long-term costs associated with caring for and (hopefully) rehabbing an addict.

Are you upset about pain meds, handicapped tags, or just at doctors in general?

I saw this thread and wanted to chime in.

I'm actually prescribed 3 pills a day/90 a month and I go see my dr once every 3 months from a knee injury I sustained almost 5 years ago.

If I decide to ignore the prescription instructions and take like 20 a day, how is anyone but myself to blame? In this situation, only I am to blame, but if my dr decides to take cash under the table and write another Rx for me, then the blame is placed on us both. Of course then I have to find a pharmacy to fill the Rx and hope they will take a cash payment as if I try to use my insurance, my insurance will come back saying that I have recently gotten a Rx for this not that long ago.

In essence it depends on the case and how everything was handled to know where the blame truly lies.

Too bad there is no way you can nicely tell a parent that their child is basically being a total brat

I watched the same Anthony Bourdain you did yesterday. Calm down. It doesn't help to blame anybody. What help does blaming do?

What have you done today to help the problem?

You sack of shite.

The only two times I have ever said my pain was a 10 was when I was passing a kidney stone (frick that shite) and could barely speak and the moments following my first PT session after ACL surgery.

Other than that, people need to get off this "its a 10" shite.

I always try to preface with patients when asking. I'll usually refer to 10 as "emergency room" pain or something like that.

When someone walks into the room without a limp and says their foot pain is 10/10 I know it's going to be very difficult to manage their expectations.

Yep. And at some point people have to take responsibility for their lives, even if it IS difficult at times. We've become a nation of victims.

I absolutely hate the "pain chart" that nurses/doctors make you do

last week I went in because I had a severe reaction and had blisters on my hands and feet, I could barely walk and I couldn't do anything with my hands/fingers (my wife had to button my pants, etc)

I had no idea how to "rate" the pain

I think I eventually said 6 or 7 but I was afraid maybe that was too low? but I didn't want to exaggerate either with a 10

just felt the need to rant about that for a bit

Well how else are we supposed to know how much pain you are in?

I have no idea

but I just imagine that everyone basically says 6 or 7 because they don't want to go too high but not go too low either

so I just imagine they are not very accurate

No, I've had patients rate their pain a 2-3...cause at the time it wasn't that bad. Then when they rate their pain a 5 on up...I know it's getting worse.

I wonder if states that have access to medical marijuana have less opioid dependent citizens. The was a study in Time a few years ago that showed less opioid related deaths in states that allowed access to medical marijuana. The reasons were inconclusive but one could guess that marijuana was chosen as the pain reliever or drug of choice instead of other prescribed narcotics. My thinking is people want to get high so why not offer them a safer alternative or imo the safest alternative.
