You’ll be downvoted, but I agree with you. My rule of thumb is to never buy someone a gift related to a serious hobby of theirs unless you know a ton about it as well and know the item is quality.

I appreciate any gift I'm given, and it's clear she TRIES to put thought into SOME of it....but I just end up returning or not using any of it....plus I always feel like I suck at faking a smile at some of the weird stuff I unwrap

Right right..because each gift should be appreciated, and time matters not things....and you are such a thoughtful and sentimental person that you've never gotten a gift that you didn't love and get a ton of use out of

We do the "white elephant" thing on one side of my family. It's nothing big. Everyone gets a gift around $25.. I really don't care about the gifts, personally I think Christmas should be about kids and don't really think "what will I get this year".. But I have an aunt and uncle who are cheap.

There is a men's game and women's game. Every year they buy pretty much the same gift. Well they switch it up. For the men's gift, they rotate. One year its a flash light, the next year it will be some type of cheap tool set. For the women's gift, it is a candle and a reef. Its pretty much a joke they haven't caught on to yet. And everyone tries to pay attention to which one is theirs. Not everyone catches it, but if you pick their gift you are stuck with it..

All the women hands down. They will ask me what I want. I will tell them what I want knowing full well they will wind up getting something completely different or something they think I would like better. This was my entire child hood.

So now when they ask me I will just say “I have all I need, you get me what you want to get me and I will be happy”.

Actually ended up being one of the better gifts....I actually ate some so got more use than anything else. But I was just super confused when I opened it. It's not like a known thing I love cheese balls, I don't think I've ever even eaten one around her..... but she thought a metric ton of them would be right up my alley.... was just kinda left confused for a second trying to figure out the joke behind it

Because you're viewing gifts from a purely selfish point of view.

We play dirty Santa with the family, one of the participants is about to get kicked out. He literally buys the first thing in the store he sees when he things about it.....if he is in a plumbing supply store you may open up some pvc joints and some adhesive.

It is hard to tell, but it is just stupid. Then we do all the switching and swapping and they then say we have to roll dice and pass it around a time or two. I just dont understand at all why we do the first part. But, it is my extended family, so I just smile and go along, it aint that big of a deal.

I got a small family and we all pretty much give good gifts. I just bought her a Christmas red Michael Kors purse so I know my gift game is on point

When I was in college in the 80s, my grandmother (who lived through the Depression & WWII) one year gave me hangers. I was a little confused at the time. She's been gone since 1993. I still have the hangers. The gifts are the people in our lives, not the material things they buy/make. Merry Christmas!

Oh, I get it. My last gift given to me by my grandmother was a dollar store coffee mug. That mug will stay with me forever.

I'm not sure because we did secret Santa, but one of those frickers brought a sack full of human kidneys. That's fine and all, but I gave some pretty obvious clues that I wanted a liver.

I'd say the answer is you. You gave us a shitty thread and the time to read it that I'll never get back.

My Son.

He means well but he's always a last minute shopper so he hits the "as seen on TV" section in Walmart pretty hard and spends about twenty bucks on each person .... except his nieces and nephews. He buys them cool stuff.

I usually get a lighted screw driver or another cheap tool of some sort. God Bless him. I love that kid. He's the baby ... he'll turn 21 in January and graduates from college this time next year.

I told him he'll have to up his gift giving game when he gets married.
