If one is going by fame in a specific industry, not to the public at large, there is a Tony nominated director on Broadway who was born and raised in BR.
She directed Annie Live on NBC in addition to getting that nom for a revival of Into The Woods.

Lynn Whitfield is an African American actress who's appeared in a number of films. Probably more well known in the African American community. Beautiful lady.
