I'm no fan of MacArthur but he intended to stay in the Phillipines and die with his men. Roosevelt ordered him out. He expected to be court martialed. Instead he got the Medal of Honor.

Macarthur totally fricked up the Korean War. He misjudged the Chinese badly. I am certain it was not all his fault but he had his hand in that.

this is 100% accurate, which is why i said for "most" of his career.
by the 50s, MacArthur was a shadow of his former self. it's borderline greek tragedy-esque.

His own Intel warned him the Chinese were preparing to cross the Yalu. He chose to ignore it.

The real answer is most likely a peacetime general we've never heard of.

No he was a baseball player. We’re talking about Generals

Hap Arnold/Curtis Lemay deserve some consideration.

Bull Halsey, don’t forget about what he did for carrier tactics in WWII

The Germans increased production after US strategic bombing began. The tactical strikes against German AFVs/ground targets were vastly overestimated.
The real answer is George Washington. To be able to hold an army together against the preeminent military force in the world with little support from his own government is nothing short of miraculous. He is a paragon of leadership.

He may not have won very often, but his ability to keep the army together over those first years was impressive.
Not sure anyone has ever retreated better than Washington. And I mean that as the highest of compliments.
Guy pulled a Houdini or two moving whole armies across rivers. He lived to fight another day.

Bull Halsey,
too lazy to look it up but wasn't there a push for a court martial of him?

Hadn’t heard of him so I googled him. Definitely one of the GOAT nicknames. “Old Iron Tits”
