Do you know anyone in the area you will be staying? Ask around and see if there are people who rent out, but just don't use AirBnB.
A friend of mine bought a house in New Orleans and months after he got fricked because the house was suddenly in a zone that could only offer AirBnB during certain times of year only. Anyway, he has to do it by word of mouth and it actually is working out better than he expected....
So maybe you can find some deal like that.

Never get an airbnb if the owner of the place is a guy because there’s about a 100% chance he put a hidden camera in the bathroom.

Did Airbnb in Costa Rica. Got a two bedroom/1 bath house for $700 for 6 nights and had a/c, which is rare there. Never had a single issue.

There was a time when AirbBnB was a bargain. It blew up and so did those hidden fees. Now it’s cheaper to stay in a hotel.
