Had a tonsillectomy and uvulaplasty at 33. Stayed at my folks house for a few days after. Only time I have ever said the f word in front of them. Would take a swig of liquid Lortab and it would take forever for me to swallow bec I knew how bad it was going to hurt. After about 15 minutes I could eat a lil something soft. Hell of a way to loose weight!

Surgeons make money doing surgery, so don't be surprised if they recommend it. I work in surgery every day. I wouldn't have surgery unless I had a life threatening illness. JMO.

Very important to take your pain meds as often as prescribed initially. Set your alarm to wake up during the night to do so.

Was recommended that I get mine out at 24. I used to always get strep, and the last time I was in the hospital for 2 days and an abscess formed behind a tonsil (that fricking sucked getting it drained). I opted not to do it and luckily have not had strep since.

Yep, former LSU football player. He was an orthopedist in Alexandria.

I took mine out about 4 years ago. I had bad recurrent infections a few times per year which only usually lasted for only a day or two.... however the final time lasted multiple days and was truly the last straw for me. I'm an MD, and I went to fellow known ENT and told him it was finally time.
I knew what I was getting myself into but did not think the pain would be as bad as vast majority make it out to be.... I was wrong... waaaay wrong.... it was absolutely horrible full 7 days. I drank limited minimal water and Gatorade. Few bites of ice cream. Lost 15 pounds in a week before I could eat anything. I would stand at kitchen sink and psych myself up for 10 mins every time I needed to swallow the liquid pain meds. Absolutely awful.
Sorry you have to go through this. But now that its over, it is possibly the greatest decision I've ever made. I don't think I have have ever been sick or had a single sore throat since.
Best of luck...

Why have they stopped doing this procedure for kids if so many need this later in life? Seems like we're all better off having our tonsils removed then taking a risk when it's much more painful and more dangerous.

Friend of mine had it done. He said every time he swallowed, even just regular water, it felt like someone was stabbing him in the throat.

Bump for the morning crew.
So any Dr.s care to comment - should kids get theirs removed like in the past, or is keeping them the right trend?
Also, any of you with them ever get tonsil stones?

Daughter had hers out at 21 and had brain surgery at 22. in her opinion.....tonsils were much worse.

I've heard it's horrendous as an adult like you're saying. My tonsils are often enflamed and I have problems with them so I wonder if it would be best for me to remove them.
My sister had hers taken out at 18 and the scabs tore off and my parents rushed her to the hospital. I went into the bathroom and it looked like someone had been murdered in there. Tonsillectomies ain't no joke.

Was 35 when I had mine out. Worse than hernia surgery. Couldn't eat anything solid for over a month. Got dehydrated two days after surgery. Very painful. But I haven't had throat infections since. The last straw for me was I got an infection right after Christmas and missed a few days of prime rut time during deer season

Had mine out at 21. I didn't really have any pain. I ate Sonic chicken the next day and went shopping. The hardest part was like 6-7 days post-op because I think that's when the healing really kicked in. My best advice is don't eat dairy and make a medicine schedule and actually follow it. I would also suggest looking at Pedialyte frozen pops. They will keep you hydrated and taste pretty good.

Had mine done at age 43. The pain was as bad as everyone says, and for some reason I also had referred pain in my ears. Warm compresses on my ears felt like heaven. Now that it's over, I'm very glad that I did it. Nothing tastes right for a couple months after.

I consistently get them in my left tonsil. Absolutely disgusting. Have been considering going to an ENT and possibly getting them removed but after reading this thread I'm thinking hell no. Not a necessity.

After the first couple of posts in this thread, I was like "cool I could stand to lose a few pounds and get a couple weeks off work." Reading further and now frick that.

My wife had her's taken out last year at 65. She lived on liquid hydrocodone and jello for two weeks.
She also lost 17 pounds in those two weeks.
