Was planning some healthy meals this weekend and read it is 25 grams, give or take, for a healthy adult male. This morning for breakfast, I noticed on the nutritional labels of food I was eating - one apple, one cup orange juice, one English muffin with one turkey sausage, egg, and slice of cheese, one slice of whole wheat bread and one teaspoon of Oregon blackberry jam. The total: 51 grams of sugar.

Admittedly, the OJ blew by mind - 21g right there. But even taking this out, it was still over the daily allotment. The wheat bread had four grams of sugar.

What are some good foods with low sugar intakes? I am really worried about this because even though I am active, I must have been going over this allotment my whole life.

I probably wreck that with coffee before I even get to work.

Better start reading those nutrition labels, bro.

Juice has tons of sugar. Think about how many grams of sugar are in an orange. Now think about how many oranges it takes to make one glass of orange juice.

I have a sweet tooth. No way in hell I do less than double the recommended amount every day. It's a miracle I'm in good shape and not diabetic

Make steel cut oats and put cinnamon and a spoon of honey for breakfast.

25 grams of sugar is tough to adhere to. One banana has over 14.

I do. Try for <20. It was tough at first but I feel so much better. Sleep better.

The trick is to focus on vegetables, protein and things like avocado, etc. you have to replace the sugar calories with something.

Most fruit juice is packed with sugar

I keep track of calories eaten vs calories burned but not sugar

I know that an active person can enjoy a greater caloric and fat intake, but is this the same with sugar?

Squeezed 224 oranges the other day. Got 3 gallons of juice. Have about twice that in grapefruits. Don't know what to do with them

Try having some veggie juice in the morning.

ETA: But no, I like sweet tea and Coca-Cola too much to adhere to the sugar intake limit.

I've been avoiding processed sugar and wheat. Don't drink fruit juices often. Don't worry about sugar in fresh fruit.

Have had a few slices of King cake, but only once a week or so.

I try to stick with no added sugar. All fruit has sugar so there is no way around that other than moderation.

I try to eat lower carb, in general. I love sugar, but I gain weight easily if I don't seriously restrict my intake. I also feel a lot less hungry when I'm not eating sugar. If you aren't fat, it's probably not a big deal.

Common snacks & meals are eggs, cheese, nuts, meat & veggies, avocado, lower sugar fruits, like strawberries.

Start by avoiding this word

quote:

packets of food

As long as you aren't eating an ungodly amount of fresh fruit, you should be fine.

Almost everything you ate came packaged.

one apple, one cup orange juice, one English muffin with one turkey sausage, egg, and slice of cheese, one slice of whole wheat bread and one teaspoon of Oregon blackberry jam

Ditch the juice and drink water, ditch the sausage and opt for deli ham or turkey if you want protien (or just eat more eggs), ditch the muffin and opt for wheat toast/bread, add fresh veggies (bellpepper, spinach, etc) and ditch the jam and use fresh fruit instead. Hell, even frozen fruit that you defrosted the night before is more healthy than jam/jelly. If you are looking to add "sweet", top it with local honey instead of jam/jelly.

Farmers markets, but you'd be better off using fresh blackberries and adding honey rather than sugar that comes with preserves.
