Made an emergency landing there back in 1991 on my way back from Rome. Folks that took the guy having a heart attack off the plane seemed nice. Hope that helps.

We rented a car and drove all over the area last year for 10 days. Nova Scotia, P.E.I., & New Brunswick.
The best food and culture was experienced on NS.
Really good food, they don't use the cliché 'Farm to Table' because all ingredients come from the area. The Bicycle Thief in Halifax was consistent on food and service.
Make sure you stop in at the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou Harbour for some live music and a potential cameo from local celebrity Gerry "Spoon Boy" Deveau We sat next to this guy at the bar all night. His accent felt like I was talking to a relative.
Hideaway Campground & Oyster Market was another highlight. They grow & harvest oysters from the pristine waters in the nearby cove. Very hospitable husband & wife owners.
Then Point Prim Lighthouse, & Point Prim Chowder House and Oyster Bar on P.E.I. are right up your alley. $20 U.S. for two steamed lobsters. Overall, the island was cool but the people seemed a little uptight.

my parents lived there my senior year of high school and freshman year at lsu.
went visit a few times.
its a really cool place.
lots of outdoors stuff and a college so there were some women
winter sucked
as another poster said St Johns NEw foundland is pretty cool too. but its a journey to get their by car from halifax.

Good stuff.
The plan is to fly into Portland, Maine, then catch a ferry from Portland to Yarmouth, then a shuttle from Yarmouth to Halifax.

I spent a few days there on a business trip. Pretty cold in January. Locals like their rum and cokes as well as most alcohol. Sorry that is all I got.
