I agree the sentence is harsh, but a quick glance at the article tells me your title is a bit misleading.

ETA: and when I read the original sourced article and saw that the "35 years" came from adding the two sentences of the defendants together (one 20 years w/13 in prison, the other 15 years), it even became more misleading.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they would have received a similar sentence if they left the flag at home, and a much lighter sentence if they left the shotgun on the floor.
