They were not protecting that cop as much as people who might have thought it would be a good idea to mess with him. He was still well armed with side arm. Push come to shove him against a mob he is dropping a few bodies before they get him.

That's my take away too. Looks like they knew it had a high probability of going sideways and some people getting shot and/or killed.
Either way, it's nice to see people doing the right thing amidst all the madness out there.

Not what I said but...I'd say the fact the they are responsible for 52% of all murders and roughly the same percentages for all crime in the USA despite being 13% of the population means that per capita they are more violent.
