I’m not sure Huntsville will ever be on the Austin and Nashville level though. Might be a great city with an economic boom, but Austin and Nashville are seeing cultural explosions as well. They’re two of the premiere places to move to and visit. Huntsville has the space and rocket center and...?

This. If Bham leadership can get their heads out of their asses, there's a lot of potential for job growth. The whole downtown area has been brought back to life with a lot more "city" scene than Huntsville. Revitalization and developments are popping up left and right. Just need Homewood, Mtn Brook, Vestavia, Hoover to keep the momentum going for some actual economic development.

It's weird how 25-40 year olds have gone from hating Bham to actually having pride in their city.

I’ll tell you as an outsider who has looked to move to Birmingham from a much larger and more expensive city, the schools are a much bigger issue than city government. They’re little fiefdoms and a relic of the post-Brown vs. Board South. There’s nothing like it in Nashville or Atlanta or Louisville or wherever.

Unless you convince the residents of Mountain Brook, Vestavia, etc. to open up the district to more kids from the county, it will stunt Birmingham growth in the cradle. Or you can dramatically improve Birmingham city schools themselves. Or a big Catholic or cheaper private option.

Huntsville has been gaining steam for investors. Smart local government. I could live in Huntsville.

FIFY

NYC, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco, Charlotte, Minneapolis, Miami, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Washington DC, Houston, Detroit, Seattle, St Louis, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are all large to mid market banking centers with a much bigger financial industry footprint than Birmingham.

Birmingham, Jacksonville, Nashville, and New Orleans have a sub-branches of the Federal Reserve branch in Atlanta though.

I think Birmingham's future is tech, bio-med, and durable goods manufacturing more than it is finance.

Tech? Wouldn't that be more geared towards Huntsville? When I think of Birmingham, I think of steel.

I agree with your banking assessment. I know AM South/Regions is based in Birmingham, but I certainly don't think of it as a major hub for banking like I do for Charlotte or Atlanta.

Greenville is nice. If I had to leave Charleston and the low country, Greenville would be my next in-state choice.
