Yea that's a tough animal to tangle with. Yea the gazelle aren't going to do anything but plenty of their 'prey' are formidable opponents

Where would you say a silverback gorilla ranks in the hierarchy?

Depends on if the Grizzly has a 9 iron vs a tiger

Tigers kill for a living. Male lions are constantly fighting other male lions. Bears eat berries and catch fish. It's kinda like a UFC fighter fighting some random big dude.

I think a big cat could stalk and kill a bear, whereas a bear could not do the same.

In a tight space a big cat has an advantage. Speed, stealth, flexibility. Ol' Griz needs to stand to gain the advantage of size and those powerful arms and claws.
But in more open space, the Griz has the advantage, as outlined.
And in a more open space, I'd imagine the cats would just find better things to do, other than be mauled by a big monster bear that they likely wouldn't even recognize as a food item.

A lot of this...could the bear win? Sure...
I give it to the big cats 9/10 times...

The bear wouldn't know the threat until the fangs hit that juggular...

If the bear were trained to kill all threats, I'd give him 50/50

the male lion would be tough to beat by any other animal.

I don't think people realize how much of shield his mane truly provides for him.

No contest.

That's false - Siberians can get up to 1400 pounds. They are massive.

It's not really so much the mane as it is the size of his head. And you have to consider that the male lion does not hunt. His job is to bang and to literally kill anything that wants to take over his territory. He is a fighter.

sign me up with the big cat side.

Do people just imagine the big cat coming with a straight forward attack? Doubtful, they will use their speed and agility, and be on that bear's back rapidly.

Tigers are the baddest cats on the planet. I don't think anything short of a hippo, elephant, or rhinoceros could take one down.

Give me the Lion and Tiger over the Grizzly, with all of the others being smart enough to run away and the Grizzly way too slow to catch them.

Just because bears are omnivorous and eat a large variety of things doesn't mean they arent incredible hunters and killers. The staple of their diet is still meat. New studies done with tracking collars and game cameras are revealing that grizzlies eat a lot more meat than previously thought, which was already supposed to be a great deal. A grizzly bear would absolutely destroy any cat. They are the baddest predator in our area (save polar bears, those frickers are incredible) which is why a Grizzly is no.1 on my hit list with a bow.

Grizzly bears can run up to 40 mph

The male lion is fast, though. 50 mph

Cracked up when I saw this thread, we were debating this at work on Friday. ?? I started the debate as tigers are inline to take top of the food chain on earth if man were not here. Someone brought up grizzlies but don't buy it. I think people really underestimate the size and strength of the Siberian tiger. They run up thebody of elephants in the jungle for christ sake and pull men from their backs!

I think a tiger is the only one that would have any chance. Cheetahs are tiny. Jaguars are super badass but still not big enough. A female lion would have a slight chance, but still I dont think, too small.

I think a big arse tiger or male lion could have a shot against a standard grizzly in the proper arena.

I think tight quarters like a cage match, the bear easily wins, but if the tiger is allowed an entire prairie to stalk and run away, I think they would jump on the back of the grizzly and eventually wear it down after several attacks.

Grizzly 8/10 times wins though. They're just too powerful and much more nimble than people realize. If he gets a good paw on a big cat, its game over IMO.

Amur tigers of the Russian far East are known to kill Ussuri brown bears weighing up to 800lbs. That is comparable in size to North American inland grizzlies.

A northern Bengal, or Siberian tiger could hold their own vs a grizzly. Grizzlies typically weight < 1000lbs. Usually 700-900lbs in Yellowstone NP. Northern Bengal tigers (found in Terai region of Nepal, northern India and Bhutan) typically weigh between 550-680lbs, modern wild Siberian tigers are smaller and weigh between 430-480lbs.

Wild Amur tigers are not as heavy as they were a century ago, and typically weigh around 100lbs less than Bengal tigers found in the Himalayan Foothills. However, captive Siberian tigers can weigh 600-700lbs, fairly regularly. Siberian Tigers have massive jaw muscles and skull lengths up to 15 inches. That's how they are able to kill bears in the wild, when in predatory disposition.
