AI can be helpful, but lacks human judgement for critical decision making.

AI offers a major opportunity to enhance and augment radiology reading, not to replace radiologists.

Of course it doesn't -- today. No one is claiming this will replace doctors now. I clearly said in 10 years for radiologists. Those articles are just to illustrate where the technology is today, which is incredibly advanced and only improving.

You don’t understand that accuracy in medicine isn’t like finding a crack in an aluminum rim, we all know a computer can do that. Variation in physiology...look, it doesn’t matter what I say...computers will get better and hopefully they help us in medicine. I will die before radiologist go the way of the Dodo.

There is no emotions or critical decision making when you have all the information that a radiologist gets. Much like pilots now a days, path's and radiologists etc will be monitors of the system to make sure things are accurate and take control if needed. Granted old path's taking this "aide" is very difficult to do.

Why not just show the treating Dr the MRI, if it’s that easy? He should know where to look and what condition he’s looking for. Why are there radiologist anyway?

Possibly. But unless you are 80, it won't be from old age.

Because they came before computers.

Because they aren't trained to read them?

No one is saying that Radiologists are not needed, and don't serve a role. They do. But the future could change that.

My friend is cosmically lucky then, because he gets an easy job, computers to do it on, and paid like a good, OK...decent pro baseball player.

I'm sure your friend would be proud you are white knighting for him, and I'm sure this won't affect him too much. But the next generation of radiologists will have challenges. (And many other professions as well).

Indeed he did enter in at a good time.

I would not enter into radiology or pathology if I was in pre-med.

I’m not white knighting, I helped him last weekend change out a power resistor in a >$250k stereo...and that’s just ‘the lake stereo’.

And you don't seem to understand that trying to claim that humans are more accurate than computers at anything is kind of silly.

Variation in physiology
We have toy apps on our phones that can tell when a billion different faces are smiling or not, in real-time video. I don't think variation in physiology is much of an issue.

Radiology exploding. Not decreasing. I have recruiters contacting me constantly. Imaging is big money makers for hospitals. They would have to change laws to allow robots to do imaging with radiation. Not happening.

I hope you are better at reading X-Rays than reading the internet.

We are talking about in the future. Possibly 10 years or more from now.

Your comment is like someone, in a Self-Driving Cars thread, stating: Regular cars are selling like crazy. These self driving cars won't happen. They would have to change laws.

No shite.

consultants

Hey! I resemble that remark!

I am a consultant and I work in healthcare, but I'm also not being replaced because the medical workers who have to use new technology always have questions, or need the new technology configured in a way that better fits their workflows. Basically "AI" doesn't work on it's own, someone has to be there to make sure that it's working appropriately.

I’m in a field that has computers that try to interpret things and let me assure you while beneficial to some I’ve seen them miss life threatening diagnosis many times.

As for you seemingly thinking they can replace generalist fields let me say this-people lie. Whether it’s embarrassment, whether it’s illegal or who the hell knows why patients lie. Also you have to account for dialect education and age. A robot is not going to be able to get a satisfactory history and physical on a four year old from cut off and for AI they are dependent on good input to give good output. It won’t happen in any of our lifetimes

I said the threat to them is PAs and Nurse Practitioners.
