Scariest is an odd word to categorize organized crime groups.
They all deal in death
They all deal in death

i don't think the Yakuza deals in death that often
they're more about honor and their black market/underground economy. i think they're even scared of the police
movies have kind of given them a lot of PR in their dangerousness that is more mythology than reality

The correct answer is Mexico
Where else is the news reporting school children being rounded up for slaughter or bodies being dissolved in barrels?

in their home country or in the united states? that changes things.

Mexican cartels are shitty, but move down the social standing ladder and you can find worse in Central America
the gangs of Guatemala and El Salvador make Mexican outfits look tame
the biggest difference is that Mexico has basically been in a civil war for a while now, so it's not really "gang activity" anymore

The Mexican mafia is para-military. I'm not sure how many on that list can say that.

do the russians ever whack people in the US? everyone says they're the "baddest' but you still hear more about la cosa nostra.

Italy, where the Mafia was born.
They run the country.

No they don't. They're basically the same thing except the Mexicans have some money

I'm just trying to make sense of this 'scariest' premise. The end result is death for the most part if you are going to tangle with these groups.
I don't think you can be scared of the police in this business. It's a big part of it and everyone knows this going in.
Yea I think a lot of people trust movies too much with this topic

Lots of experts in this thread.

Yea. Plenty of groups, historically, contract hits to other groups. Easier to conceal where it came from.
Right now, the American(american-italian) mafia is 'back to the caves'.
RICO was a big uppercut to them. No doubt in my mind though that they will be back front stage and center in the future.
Fwiw, it's just Cosa Nostra

in Japan it's more like 2 economies. you are either above ground or black market
if you want to participate in the black market, you can't go "above ground"
if you want to participate in the above ground economy, the yakuza leaves you alone
i have to go look but joe rogan has had guys from japan on talking about this very topic. they even have funny stories about how joe wasn't allowed to work out in normal gyms if he showed his tats (b/c that's a major yakuza symbol and normal people would just leave)

The Mafia in the US took a hit with a big round up last year (I think it was last year) but they are getting smarter and more advanced. They'll be back.

But then you go to countries like Venezuela where the lines are blurred. You're talking about a country that won't even publish its homicide statistics. The drug cartels literally have the Presidency of the country at their leisure.
