Face it Louisiana if it werent for West Virginia you'd now be the laughing stock in these united states. I remember when Louisiana could rely on al and miss to hold down the bottom

Even they aren't nearly as homicidal. Their murder rate is a lot lower.

Their overall crime rate is in much lower than you would expect for a poor state.

Bham doesn’t compare at this time but it’s come a long way in the last ten years. It still has a negative stigma but I believe that will mostly disappear in <10 years. The restaurants businesses bars breweries sports teams etc are growing downtown.

Gentrification is all over south of i20.
This can be said about every big city in the US. Definitely applies to Nola as well.

Nola has more to offer for a 20s-30s with no kids than any city in Bama.

The Covington/Mandeville area is pretty similar to Daphne/Spanish Fort/Fairhope

Generally speaking Alabama has nicer schools and better infrastructure.

But I’d say the people in Louisiana are less trashy by far, other than your GS/OB money folks which is made up of mostly people from other states anyways

I grew up in Gulf Shores but family is from Nola

You can add Birmingham as well

Last time I was in Birmingham I was shocked at what weak arse city it was. It's one level above Jackson Ms. and that's as nice as I can put it.

I spent a weekend in Huntsville for a wedding last year, it didn’t seem super impressive to me, but it didn’t seem super trashy either. My only real complaint is that someone needs to teach those people what gas stations are. I saw like 3 the whole time I was there and only one of them sold deisel.

While every city pretty much has thugs and trash, you said eaten up with. These 4 towns are far from that.

I am familiar with all of the following and like them all prettybwell.

West St. Tammany as a whole (Abita, Bush, Sun, Folsom, Lee Rd., Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville).

New Roads/False River/ St. Francisville area (not as many coonasses as there used to be and the culture is isolated)

Walker/Denham

Ponchatoula/Robert

I am sure therecare many more.

As for Alabama, I find the suburbs of Birmingham to be pretty nice

We have a big country with lots of nice places.

Ehh -- Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia, and Hoover are all right there and are pretty nice. You can't really say most Louisiana cities have those options available.

So the suburbs?

quote:

Basically the same thing as people posting about Mandeville.

More like Metairie. Homewood is 5 miles from downtown Birmingham, Mountain Brook is 6 miles from downtown Birmingham, Vestavia Hills is 6.7 miles from downtown Birmingham, and boring Hoover is 10 miles from downtown Birmingham. Mandeville is a good 30 miles from downtown NOLA.

Birmingham itself is at least as hood as Nola.

I disagree. It isn't great, but New Orleans is at a different level.

quote:

And Nola is a far better city.

Agreed. Far and away better. I'd gladly live in New Orleans. Birmingham, not so much.

Madisonville has plenty of trash. It’s still a nice place to live and all, but it’s far from perfect.
