Is the Cayman one of those Porsches with Panties?

2018 718. - it will be just as fast if not faster than the '14 S...and it's the new 718.

However, lets not fool ourselves nobody buys a new $55k Cayman, add up the options then revisit.
True words.
An "average" 911 will see around $20k in options.
An "average" Cayman will see around $15k in options.

Make sure to test drive each car before you make a decision. The 718 may be the faster car, but not necessarily the more enjoyable one. One is naturally aspirated, the other is turbocharged. The options on a new Porsche will also cost a pretty penny as mentioned by others already (you would be wise to look around at lightly used examples). The sound of the NA flat six is *far* better than that of the turbo four. You can't really go wrong with a 981 or 718 in the end, however. Both cars are very capable on the street and track. The engine note of the 718 would keep me from buying one, personally. In case you were wondering, I drive a base 987.2 and a 991.1 C2S (I've yet to drive the 718, but have heard it in person).

Yes, but not lacy panties like the Boxsters.

The 981s models are already showing up on future collector cars lists as it should be the last in this model with a flat 6 (the next gen gt4 will have one). The 718 is a better chassis but the flat four is not well received.
Options are the key here. If the 981s has a manual and sport chrono package, I'd head that way.
Or buy and older 911.

You can pick up a nicely equipped 2014 or '15 911S with 15-30k miles for $65-75,000 now (the original MSRPs would have been around $120-130k)...that would be my choice over either of the choices given.
The 991 911S is a really powerful machine and a blast to drive---and the motor/drivetrain seems bulletproof...........so far (I broke 50,000 on the odometer this morning!)
But be aware, your 10,000 mile interval services are not inexpensive if you use the dealer. You can haggle with the dealer a little bit, though. An oil change retails for $379 on a 911.
Enjoy the drive!

Any pre-718 Cayman with the 6-cyl is a buy compared to the new one. The new turbo 4 lets the car down. Watch/read any review of the 718s. They all boil down to this:
Is the car objectively better in every measurable way? Yes. Is the new engine incredibly boring and soulless and kill the car’s whole vibe? Also yes.
