Where would you have rather been a soldier: Stalingrad or Verdun?

It's the worst of both worlds but if you were forced to choose, where would you have fought and why?

Verdun. At least if you survived you had a chance to rotate out.

In Stalingrad you were stuck in the frozen hell.

If I’m in the Red Army I’d rather be at the battle of Stalingrad all day.

Verdun and not even close. At least the British Army gave some what of a frick if it’s soldiers survived. The Russians gave less than zero fricks about the death of their own. Still don’t, really.

Know how I know you haven't read much on the subject?

Verdun and it isn't even close. As bad as Verdun was, stalingrad was absolutely worse.

The weather was better and there was more food at Verdun, so yeah

I’ve read up a good deal on Stalingrad but not so much on Verdun I will concede. But at Stalingrad the Red Army had the supply advantage. I wouldn’t of wanted to be a German soldier at Stalingrad.

I'd rather be German or French in verdun than Russian in stalingrad.

The Russians were absolutely brutal. The weather in stalingrad was absolutely brutal. House to house fighting. Floor by floor block by block. As a Russian, you're equally as likely to die from your comrade as from the enemy.

In verdun you had the chance to be rotated out. You weren't clearing out room to room floor to floor. But you had to deal with the artillery.

Both were horrible. But stalingrad had to be the living embodiment of hell.

Also, last place I'd want to be in verdun is in one of the forts. frick being stationed in Fort Douaumont at the onset of the battle.

You make excellent points and ole Comrade Stalin did say “it takes a brave man to be a coward in the Red Army”.

Verdun boggles my mind. 300 day battle with an average of 2,300+ casualties per day. And as bad as that sounds Stalingrad is much worse.

Verdun, and it ain't even close.
German army was stripping frozen bloody clothes from dead bodies for warmth at Stalingrad...and getting their arse whipped. Temps were consistantly 20 to 30 below. Russian mud stifled supply lines, so summer uniforms were all most of them had. frickest that shitiem.

Give me a short death from shelling over slowly freezing and starving to death.

eTA: if any of you haven’t listened to Dan Carlin’s Blueprint for Armageddon or Ghosts of the Ostfront, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Excellent programs.

The whole goal of verdun was to bleed France white.

Almost happened. Almost.

It was a site specifically chosen to cause as much bloodshed as possible. The Germans knew the French would go all in to defend verdun, they just didn't realize exactly what "all in" meant.

Stalingrad based on having 20 more years of medical technology. You are not coming away unscathed from ethier so maybe they can fix you

I can’t help but think what that would do to me mentally though. Being in the closest place to hell ever seen on earth, getting to leave, and then being forced to come back. Always having that thought in the back of your head. With that being said, I haven’t read up much on the battle of Stalingrad. Could someone point me in the direction of something good that goes into details of how bad Stalingrad was? Wikipedia focuses a lot on the technicals of the battle
