Obviously they can afford it.

That is an understatement. We don't have kids, but our commute is 10 minutes to work from midtown. Coworker moved to Katy recently and he's spending over 2 hours a day in his car. Screw that

You are so off base here. Katy blew up because it's close to the Energy Corridor and has some of the best schools around. Trust me, there are PLENTY of people that live in Katy that can afford to live in Houston, but choose not to.

Those who can't keep up with the other joneses in cinco

There are just as many people living beyond their means inside the loop than outside. I don't think location makes someone more financially responsible.
If oil stays sub $50 for a few years you'll be able to pick up either for cheap.

Do you work in Houston?

Why would you spend an extra two hours of your day in traffic that you could be with your family?

I work in the memorial area, and my hours are from 6:30-3:30. I have a 30 minute commute each way, and I am home at 4:00 with plenty of time to spend with my family.

Buy a spacious new house in Katy for $300k, put the savings in retirement and use the good public schools.

Some really awful advice in this thread. Katy is literally the saddest area of all of greater houston.

The entire west side is terrible. North west, west, south west. It's all bad.

If you have to go to the suburbs, and I mean life or death have to, go to Humble or south east Clearlake area, towards the bay and salt water.

Yes all those houses are nice. Yes Katy is a bland suburb. That's the point of a suburb. Affordable, spacious, good schools, low crime. The commute is not good but that's the trade off. There's always a trade off. Besides, I don't get the uppity attitude here.

Lots of suburbs across the country, especially the older ones, are very colorful and charming. Good schools and low crime do not have to be accompanied by kitschy McMansions.

Ridiculous. Not 2000 anymore. A lot has changed.

SE Clear Lake is ok but you better love water and boats. And high insurance for being so close to water. Any other SE region of Houston is a nightmare. And clear lake is a burn like any other. Curious how clear lake does. Oil and gas down? NASA down? Clear Lake will be down.

We love Katy and have been here for 10 years now. I am a breeder though with one crumb snatcher and I am 42.

If the OP is single and 29 then hell no don't come to Katy. All the midtown, downtown, WestU people can squabble. Oh yeah Rice Village too.

Memorial was mentioned. If the price of your home has a decimal point in it Memorial is awesome. But other places are called "Memorial" for being near memorial drive. It can go from zero to sketchy in about 2.2 seconds.

We bought 1 block east of Shepherd Drive in the Heights, paid $213/sq ft in 11/2013, all the new builds around us in the $275/sq ft range right now. I would be sending our children to Love elementary, not a good school, but they would learn spanish.

OP, it more depends on where you are in your life and what you want. Our next move is focused on getting zoned to Memorial/Stratford HS.

In these 10 years how many times have you pulled up to the wrong house because it looks identical to yours?

Sorry, it's really a terrible place, but you love you 0.23 acres and 4,200 square foot house.

If you're ok with a suburb not near downtown this would be my pick. Might be a little biased, but it's 20-25 minutes from downtown. 25-30 min from Galveston. Then obviously you have the lake and everything that goes with that. Tons of good neighborhoods too like Bay Oaks, Pinebrook, Northfork, etc. You'll get way more house for your money down here than the neighborhoods you posted in the OP.

You can also jump on 146 to get around Houston if you're heading to BR/Laffy/LC etc..
