Was in 1st period Spanish class in my suburban Atlanta high school, at about 8:50 AM one of the other teachers came into the classroom and asked her "Did you hear about what happened in New York?" and my teacher turned on the TV. I originally thought it was a massive office fire in the North Tower (didn't hear the word "plane" yet) until we saw (live) Flight 175 slamming into the South Tower. At that point, we knew it wasn't an accident. The rest of the day was simply surreal.

Going to Lowes to buy some stuff for the new house. NPR reported a small plane had hit one of the towers. They thought it was weird but no big deal. Coming out of Lowes they reported a second small plan had hit the other tower and the announcers were puzzled at the coincidence. Turned on CNN when I got home and saw just how stupid NPR was being. Then I called my mom and told her to turn on CNN (back when they still were a news source).

Downtown Chicago about 5 blocks from the Sears Tower wondering if that was next before they evacuated the entire downtown area

I was working as a police officer. Our admin freaked out and we were sent to various "high level" targets to protect them. I was thinking, the terrorist aren't coming to small town Mississippi.

In an airplane about to fly from Sacramento, CA to NYC.
I remember the airport after I deplaned and got to a TV in the terminal being so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Interestingly enough, I flew from Logan to Sacramento yesterday. Sitting in my seat waiting for take off, the Capt announced we were leaving from the same gait as Flight 11. He asked us to take a minute and remember what happened that day- to remember all who were lost. Not something I wanted to hear right before take off.

pulling into the parking lot at work and had these guys on. they actually made a joke about the rumors (since it had just happened it was unsubstantiated) about the first plane hitting the tower. Something along the lines of,"...must be Ted Kennedy driving that plan."
in the minutes following that joke, it was verified what had actually happened and their tone changed significantly.
always had heard older people talk about where they were when something happened....guess i am "older".

September 10th, I remember watching something to do with WWII. I don’t remember the specifics. Was with an ex fiancée at the time and I remember clearly her asking me “why do you think no one has ever attacked the United Stages since then?”
My comment was that “there really isn’t anyone stupid enough to do that anymore. We’re basically an enormous island that no one else can get to without us knowing it’s coming.”
Then Sept 11 happened. I was at work and she called me on my Nokia cell pbone
and told asked me if I had heard that some kind of plane hit the WTC. I remember thinking that it was probably just some small two engine plane or something ridiculous someone must have tried doing……
Then it escalated from there.
Sat in the lunch room the rest of the day watching what was going on in disbelief.
To this day, I don’t watch any of the memorials. I can barely read some of the quotes…the people jumping turns my stomach.
With that said, the 9/11 Memorial and museum is a bucket list item.

I heard about a plane hitting the tower a bit earlier but assumed it was a small plane.
It was my first semester at LSU, First class of the day was English. I’ll never forget the girl who sat next to me who told me that a second plane had hit. We started a mutiny in the class as the teacher didn’t want to cancel…so the whole class just walked out.
Went home in time to see the towers fall and didn’t leave my couch other than to pee until the sun came up the next morning.
Every year on this day I send that girl a message on Facebook. It’s funny how a moment can bond you. She is now married with kids in Florida.

Lived in a house off Drusilla. Mom called me on my way to class and told me about the first plane. Walked into ISDS class in Tureaud and learned about the second plane. Teacher proceeded with the class as normal but allowed a girl to listen to the radio on her earbuds. The girl started to cry and said the tower collapsed. Teacher let us all leave and I drove to the frat house and we all watched all day around the living room TV. I can’t remember which day it was after that but they had a thing at the memorial tower. I was standing there and felt a large presence next to me and heard “man this is fricked up”. I said “it sure does” and turned as I was saying it to see Rohan Davey. We just sort of looked at each other, shook our heads and then continued watching some military guy address the crowd.

I was fishing offshore of destin and we heard the same thing over the VHF. We kept fishing until the next one was reported. Was funny to listen to the radio chatter complaining that the fighter jets swinging over ever boat out there were flying too low.

In College studying for a test that morning . Few hours later finally turn TV on and see a smoking building. Really think nothing of it . In my head it was the Die-hard movie playing. Flip the channel and the same movie is on. Flip again and as they say the rest is unfortunately History.

I was about 10 miles north of Dallas with a corner office facing Hwy 75 (a major freeway in and out of Downtown), once the news hit and it was obvious we were under attack it was nuts with everyone getting the hell out of downtown.
no one knew if we were next
I was listening to The Musers on 1310 the ticket as they explained what was going on

On campus job at CAE at LSU.
Walked into the basement office and nobody was there. One of my bosses eventually came in and saw me and took me into a back room. They had a projector and the coverage on a wall. I think this was right as the second tower fell.

Driving around Lee Circle listening to that same NPR report. I had just started my first job out of law school about 3 weeks before.
Had a deposition on the 70-something floor at Shell Square. No one felt really comfortable up there so we cancelled. Ended up wandering through Uptown bars for most of the afternoon. Just silence everywhere even in crowded bars like Fat Harry’s.
