This.
I paid a lot of money for my wife's ring but I wasnt married and had no kids then, so money came a lot easier
But all that being said, she may wear the thing everyday for 60 years...so I didn't mind splurging a bit.
Sure it's materialistic, but I assume everyone that thinks I'm crazy for spending what I did has no problem shelling out $15k for granite countertops when laminate would work just fine.

Bought ours in 1992, no online and I knew fewer people with connections then. Got it at Lee Michaels, $3500. Have no clue what it is worth now.

Yes I did. I went to Jared before their commercial.
They have an 82 facet diamond which really causes the diamond to pop with sparkles.
Most diamonds are 54 facets. Some Jared Stores do not have the 82 facet diamonds, so you have to ask them.
Orlando, Las Vegas, and one in Houston have them.
The 1 carat goes for about $10k. You son't need on larger than 1 carat.
Let your eyes decide.
The Heart of Fire is 54 facets, and the 82 facet had more sparkle when I looked at it.

Did y’all ask her for preferences before you bought? I have a feeling this is coming down the pipe. I don’t want to discourage him from surprises, but I’m a little concerned he will pick something that isn’t particularly my style.
My ex never proposed, and I picked my own ring. I need to find some sort of middle ground.

My wife went looking (I didn't know) with a friend just out shopping and found one she loved. Her friend texted me a pic of it and said she really loved it. It was reasonably priced. I showed up about an hour later and bought it. Her friend never told her she sent me the text nor did either know I went right over after they left. She was surprised as hell when I proposed.

I asked my wife, she told me what she wanted. She didn’t know when or if I was going to buy what she wanted or even propose. About a month after I bought it (hadn’t proposed yet) she told me that she wanted yellow gold, rather than white gold...
She got white gold

Local jeweler 6k- paid it over 6 months bc it was interest free. I never try to spend cash money on my wife. Don’t want her to know how much I have.

I didnt spend much, but didnt have much when I bought it.
Same here. Wife and I got married when we had very little. Her engagement ring was $1800, but it was mispriced in the counter and we got it for 25% less. It's a small stone but a gorgeous setting, and she still gets complements on it.

1.5 Ct moissanite from moissaniteco.com. Got the hearts and arrow cut so it looks exactly like a diamond. Only diff it's slightly more radiant, which I don't think is a negative. I wanna say I paid 650 for it. Got the band from a local jewelry store for 2700. So ~3300 said and done. Band has 1 ct worth of diamonds.
I told her I'd never buy a diamond and I didn't and she fricking loves it. And there ain't a single person that can tell the difference. She gets so many compliments like "Whoa! He's a keeper! He did great! That thing is huge!" They all eat it up and I gladly tell them it's not a diamond with my big shite eating grin
