When someone talks about something that’s wrong with them or something bad that’s happened

To them and your response is “I’m sorry” and they say why it’s not your fault? Do they not understand I’m just showing sympathy? Am I the only one that says this or is this something other people deal with.

They say it for the same reason you say "I'm sorry" even when you really aren't or for the reason you say "fine" when someone asks how your day is going even if your day has sucked. They're just canned responses to keep everything moving. No need to overthink it.
