When people used to talk about having a “nervous breakdown”, what were they describing?

According to modern day mental health diagnoses is what I’m referring to. I remember as a kid hearing about relatives having a nervous breakdown, and I never really understood what happened to them.

growing up it was the sign us little shits were about to push momma bear to the point of drowning us in the tub. so we'd lay off being heathens for a fews days and momma would be "healed".

Probably just the generic term for people having major mental issues and basically losing their mind and having to go to a mental hospital for a little while.

I’ve noticed too that you never hear it referred to as a nervous breakdown anymore.
I’m pretty sure they call it a “psychotic break” now.

With the invention of new and better drugs aren't breakdowns a thing of the past?

My dad had several events that were called nervous breakdowns. I was a pre-teen to early 20's so it was a long time ago.

As I recall/understand it he would become extremely paranoid - at least my understanding of what that means; i.e., unreasonable fear of people, think they want to do you harm. He was hospitalized several times for short periods but I don't think he took meds; maybe he should have.
