That’s the beauty of America. A private school can teach what they want and a private citizen can decide whether or no to spend his or her money with that school.
Why would people do it? I don’t care, just don’t tell me I have to do it.

I've read the article, the letter, and the posts in this thread.
She was suspended for a combination of a prior conduct violation and the aforementioned photo. The prior conduct was for a "haircut" and the final straw was the "rainbow shirt and cake".
Since you're the OT legal expert on this case, explain to everyone how a "rainbow shirt and cake", off-campus, with no *explicit* ties to LGBTQ support is the final straw for a lifestyle violation?

I think for many of us here, we went through Catholic Schools in LA if we went private.
Which had clear expectations and guidelines to follow but the discipline was reasonable and for the infractions listed for her were in school detention or something like that. Even for repeat offenders.

My son’s Jr high soccer team, at an all boys private catholic school. was supposed to scrimmage the neighboring all girl’s school high school team today...but the athletic director called it off yesterday.
That doesn't really sound like it would be a very good use of time for either team

:Farts:
Yeah, we know it is a private school, guy.
Suspending a 15 year old girl over a rainbow shirt not worn at school for a "lifestyle violation" seems a little draconian, no?
Maybe your work should fire you for what you wear outside of work.
:patiently waits for "it's a private school, durr" retort:

I went through 12 years of Catholic school. I can tell you in high school (where such issues seem to come in play) they cared how we acted in school and at "school activities" whether on or off campus. Outside of that, they could care less how we lived our lives on our "own time" - with one exception. That exception was that we had to submit to random drug testing. So, that could pick up drugs in your body that you may have ingested outside school activities.
Now... that was before social media. Maybe today it would be different.

Try wearing a Nazi costume, post it on social media, and then get back to us on whether you keep your job

Why’s that? My son plays for the #1 seed in district tomorrow against a much bigger school. Could have at least got them to gel a bit more than practice. My boy would have ran all over them. Also scary to think of him firing shots at a girl, but no one else on our team is particularly dangerous as far as their health goes.
It was supposed to be a 1 hour scrimmage. I would have gone to watch.

Comparing a nazi costume to a 15 year old girls rainbow shirt is one of the worst false equivalencies I have ever seen. Bravo

Your question needs to be re-worded....

Well, you didn't set any ground rules for what one might get fired for wearing outside of work

Hey, I agree with the point you are making. A nazi costume worn in private life in public could be grounds for firing from a private employer.
But in the terms of this girl: a rainbow shirt with no LGBTQ affiliation or symbolism attached to THAT shirt, would make a weak argument in a lawsuit as to why a 15 year old girl was suspended from school for a private life decision.
